Good Lord are there any fish in the Isles you haven't caught? You are killing me with these photos. Beautiful fish...but I can't help you with the
orange dot. A couple of my friends are trying to talk me into coming to see my beloved Everton play at Wembley at the end of May. If I do come I hope to catch
a few of the fish you've released...

What did you catch him with, looks like a fixed spool reel on that float rod, what was the bait? Also it certainly looks like a brown to me.

Nacky,
I have seen that before on a brown trout. I haven't seen it in real life but a friend of mine caught a brown trout from Penns Creek in central PA that had a similar marking. I'll see if he still has the picture. I guess its some kind of birth mark. Was yours caught in a limestone stream? |

Nacky!
Thats obviously an Irish Brown Trout!!!! They are distinctly marked with orange or green spots on their belly ....... ....... And you'll never see the 2 together in the same stream!

nacky, you could have at least cleaned off the orange powerbait from your hands before handling the fish
"And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you become fishers of men."

we are not allowed to fish for migratory fish on a sunday so i tend to go brown trout or pike fishing , i carry both a fly rod and a spinning rod which i use a
size 2 mepps , i fly fish where i can but some parts of the river only spinning is possible , its not an irish trout it is a highlands on scotland trout , very
unusual , the fin is also a bit deformed , and just for the record i do like using worms sometimes , especially with the fly rod , i also do a lot of
deadbaiting for pike , and i do mean big pike , this is a part of the year i just love , i know a spot that you will get 10-20 pike in a day , plus loads of
lost fish , i love pike fishing its very underestimated , u cannot beat seeing a pike circling the bait with its dorsal out of the water then the tail comes
out of the water and "BANG"...im in heaven..

Geirach said the difference between the fly fishing purist and the fly fishing snob is that the snob has actually thrown away his spinning rod, wouldn't
want the filthy thing around. Good for you, nackymoo - I use my old spinning rods for ice-fishing (which can be much more fun than it sounds), and taking my 3
and 5 year old nephews fishing. Fish on, nackymoo.......Mark

The orange spot sure looks like an injected latex dye, used either to mark a hatchery fish or a previously captured wild fish - for tracking/identification
purposes.

it is impossible for this fish to have been dye injected , due to the location of where it was caught , absolutely impossible , as for the worm on the fly rod
, its very simple if ur fishing in a river , u use the flow you get it out , but you do have to be very careful when casting , i have taken a few salmon with
this technique , it is also good if you are in a stocked fishery and the fish arent taking the fly.. its a great feeling holding the line and feeling every
little bite..its been quite successful for me , i got a 10.5lb brownie once with this technique also a 6lb and two @ 3lbs all in the same day ,,that was a good
day.....

thats it , i can't stand it anymore , flyfishing for atlantic salmon useing a light stick is one thing , but useing a worm on a fly with a flyrod , thats the same as useing a stick of dynamite ,just so you can have some fish or throwing a net across the stream at night for the mornings catch flyfishing with a worm is ugly , flyfishing with a worm for atlantic salmon is something that is not looked at nicely over here , we call them guys '' poachers'' now i know your not , but nacky don't you think it's just a little bit classier going out and catching one with a nice fly on a nice rod & reel and heck nacky put on your scottish kilt and go catch one is even a little bit more classy , i like to joke and tease alot and i can tell your 100% fisherman , and you have sure made the reel page exciteing the last while with all your pictures and your great secrets , and you sure can take a teaseing , but please please don't be useing a worm on a fly or throwing it for the greatest fish around ''the atlantic salmon'' they deserves to be caught with more then a worm ,

there are parts of one of our rivers (the river nevis) that are impossible to fish with the fly , that is why they allow worming on it , there is no doubt that
getting a fish on the fly is the best way but it is also pretty good getting them on worm too , this is also a bit of an art form too , once you learn how to
do it properly , i dont see it being any different from trotting with a centrepin for barbel etc , thankfully though i can say that the days of pulling fish
out tail first or pulling them in sideways with 2 trebles on their backs are gone ,

I'm guessing nackymoo is a term of endearment, like honeybuns or sweetcheeks.

Philpsych, is that Thronson's store in Babb? My mom grew up just down the road. In fact, I need to head out that way, to Browning, on Thursday. Sorry for the hijack, Nacky. Like a few others, I think I've seen a similar spot too. |

nackymoo wrote:I have saw one person use this technique and he went home with the big ones in the pool. It works best with the low-water conditions, as the pool has cool water lying at the bottom , thus creating the best conditions for feeding. The big ones like to circle the bottom of the pool and take the easy food in the best conditions, the young fish are usually no where near the big fish for survival reasons. He used a # 16 hook with night-crawler worm and a light lead weight about 6" above it. He allowed the weight to bounce in the run and when it fell to the deep area of the pool he watched for the slightest strikes and let the first few nibbles to go unchecked and when he tightened the line and most times he was successful; who needs all those expensive lures! Note: the fish I saw caught with this technique was a 5 lb. rainbow and a few 3+ lb. sea trout, no Salmon.
