Randy, to say that reel is gorgeous would be a woefully inadaquate description. I'd never sell it either, but if you ever tire of her PLEASE pm me first.

Randy...what a sublime piece of hardware! Connolly, those too, are lovely reels. But those Spey patterns are truly striking...are they yours?

your a hound dog on finding these hardy reels well done on that reel , which hardy book is it that says about the 2 3/4 and how one was found with no agate , now story is that could be the only one in that size with red agate , 2 3/4 , smallest 1912 check , who knew , congrats on the find , now please post a good picture of the check for us to look at , i'd really like to see that brass arm , and that reel with the case is hard to top in collecting ,

Winter's bounty | #351 | ||

It's been a busy Winter trying to get this year's tackle arsenal in place. In addition to a bunch of new rods and some modern reels, I picked up these
5 Hardy's & thought I'd share a photo. It has been a few years since I have pursued finding some of these older Hardys. I can say without
hesitation they are much more expensive & difficult to locate than just a couple years ago. I really had to beat the bushes to come up with these. As they
say... they ain't makin' any more of 'em.

Hardy Special Perfect | #354 | ||
|
went to the river today with a rod that i have been just itching to try out since i picked it up from a great forum member who was so kind to sell it to me ,
so it deserved to have a special reel on it for it's first outing on the bow river ,
another one of our forum members called me last week and was going to be in town and i took him to a good spot for the day , member Philpsych ''mark'' i had to be watching what i'd say all day as he's one of them so called moderators on this here site , was a nice young chap , i think he's a trout bum , smoked a a bit he did , came with a mother big rod he got from denis '' firehole '' a winston 8
wt
lets just say , he was tired at the end of the day , back to my reel and rod , weapon of choice for today was my new dana gray 8 ft , 6 wt , and the reel was my new to me 1920's hardy special perfect , was a nice outfit , love the reel , sweet sounding , was into lots of fish and it worked great , the rod is one of the nicest i have ever casted ,this is one that will never leave my hands , even the smoker had to check it out

wilf , i'll try to get some pictures up today , i'm off to the river again , what i can tell you and i'm sure alot of them true hardy guys will jump in and correct me if i'm out to lunch , my special perfect has the straight non ribbed brass foot , i think the check is what some call the 1917 ?? , the very early ones had a strap over the tensioner and some were all leaded , mine has the frame leaded and the spool and back plate in the white , i think from what i could find out they never made alot of them , one year a low of only 4 reels and a high in one year of 62 i think , so these are not very likely to pop up everyday , the trick is to find one that is 100% correct and not screwed over , just ask our forum member cdmoore off line and he'll tell you about who to stay the heck away from if your looking to buy a hardy , he just got burned bad on a special perfect , everyone on this reel page or forum members should email him for some very very good advice , the reel is a wide drum and i really like it , i have a 3 1/4 wide drum hardy now and somehow i just like the looks and feel of this reel better , might be as it is a SPECIAL

Hey Richard - It looks like that Dana Gray rod is a two-piece. I have my number coming up with Dana soon and was thinking perhaps a 6wt might be in order.
Normally, I'd want a 6wt to be longer than 8' (more like 8'6" or so)...what do you think of the rod? Would it be good for longer casts on big,
brawling streams? Can it handle a hopper and a dropper? Thanks!

i would 100% say that this rod in 8 ft is all you'll ever need , i plan on useing it lots for hopper droppers also , i did just fine with it on the bow and she's a pretty big wide river in places , the rod is IMHO about as nice a casting rod that i have ever tried out , smooth and this rod will be with me for some time , i have another reel that i'm setting up just for this rod , that's how much i like it ,
