Posts: 11 04/22/2009 21:05	Tags : None Guys, I have been recently interested in accruing some Vintage Reels for my Cane, as I figured if I was going to swallow the koollaid I mine as well use both hands to hold the glass-- My question is- You never see Line capacities on the reels. I have obviously figured out that they did not list them on the older Click and pawl Hardy's and other manufacuters I see here on this sight. Is there a say to figure what the line capacities are for the reels when they only list list 3 7/8th or 2 7/8th etc. I noticed that the old School makers Hardy etc. used the same diameters. Can someone let me know what the capacities are, say I want to purchase an older Young reel that will hold a my 4 wt DT line. I just dont want to purchase a reel that is too small or large. Another question, (for example- what does the 3 7/8th number stand for) it is the diameter of the fly reel, weight etc.... Could someone out there give me a quick education?????? thanks in advance. Posts: 16 04/22/2009 23:37	Hey T. The common measurement (3 7/8 " 3 1/2', 3" ETC> ETC> ETC>) Is the oustisde diameter of the reel. FRAME INCLUDED< spool diameter will be smaller and vary from model to model, as will widths and depths of spool. Check out the "hardy fly reel papers" thread at the top of the topics here and this will give you some good info on sizes and capacities for the differing hardy models. Hope this helps. Kevin

Posts: 7218 04/23/2009 09:29 Bulldog1935	reel diameters are overall, spool widths are the inside distance between the spool plates capacities are trial and error, because vintage lines have nothing in common with modern lines, but many people here have their benchmarks calibrated and can probably help you out if you have a specific question. the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Posts: 44 04/23/2009 15:10	You could always use the "line capacity" excuse to go out and buy one of everything! I'm working on it slowly myself... I actually spooled up a 3 inch young's reel (uniqua kind that has the screw to retain the spool) and put a 4 wt WF line on it. You should have no problem getting a modern 4 dt on there, but bear in mind that you may have very minimal backing and nice line memory if it is stored on the reel. It really boils down to how much backing you want and the overall reel weight you are aiming for. I also have a 3 1/8 youngs perfect spooled with a silk line. The spool is so narrow on that reel that I think my little 3 inch guy could hold more line, but with a silk line on there, I have a ton of room for backing. It is really amazing how much more room the plastic lines take up over their silk counterparts. I believe you would be safe getting anything close (either slightly smaller or larger) to the 3 inch mark and being able to make it work. I would probably keep it from 2 7/8 to 3 1/8 or for weight and looks issues though, but that's just me. Last Edited By: jbarnick 04/23/2009 15:21. Edited 2 times.
