It seems to me that one of the line of Megoff reels looks like a Hardy Marksman....or perhaps its better to say a Hardy looks like this Megoff
reel.........anyone familar with this Megoff reel VR series and does someone have pics they can post......its a fine looking reel in my opinion.

I remember seeing pictures when this was discussed in a topic about six months ago.
Just Reels offers some information: link (but nothing is said about a Hardy connection) They look very similar indeed. Wilfred de Bruijn

The VR Series, now called the TR Series in the US and something else by Megoff on their site, is the original reel. It is done in titanium. Hardy came along a
few years ago and arranged to have Megoff make the same reel in aluminum. So, essentially the designs are identical. If not absolutely the same, at least close
enough to not make any difference. Megoff actually makes reels for several companies. In fact, the $10K Hardy Zane titanium was a Megoff reel. He also is
collaborating with Leen Huisman of LH Design to make a reel they call the Amber, which is also a ti reel.

Thanks JR SPEY, very interesting. It's no surprise that Hardy works with others when it comes to reel design. One other example is the Angel MkI, designed
by Ari 't Hart. I know from a very reliable source that Ari hated the holes Hardy drilled in the rim of the MkI. I don't think the extra backplate
holes in the MkII made it any better!

Thanks for the info guys......I must say Im disapointed that the reel is made of titanium and of course the cost so rediculously high......I never quite
understand why anyone would need a titanium reel......I guess if Im interested in that design i would have to consider the Hardy one.........isnt that
funny.........Hardy in this case is NOT the more expensive variation of a reel!!

The Marksman is a very pretty reel, and the smallest size is very tempting I must say, especially for around $200.

whatsleft2 wrote: No one really needs a rod made from grass, either, but there are a lot of guys who want them. I think ti makes more sense in a saltwater reel, but the major appeal for trout use is beauty and the fact that not every guy on the block has one. They'll also last almost forever. When I think of what some guys pay for old Hardys, Dingleys and the like, I don't think spending $835.00 on something (TR23) that'll last longer than any of us will is "ridiculously expensive." |

And just a little side note.....I have fly fished for more than 15 yrs for saltwater strippers and albacore and never has a high guality aluminum reel rotted
out.....indeed my finnor will last just as long i suppose as the titanium..............however I was expressing my opinion on this reel thats all.......your
right I would pay more than that for a nice vintage hardy of one type or another.........at least I get my money back....!!

whatsleft2 wrote: If your FinNor or other aluminum saltwater reel is well maintained it will last indefinitely. However, I can tell you that a lot of guys do not maintain their gear very well. The bottom line is that titanium will hold up regardless. But you're right, it is not necessary, just like a lot of other trinkets in our sport aren't truly necessary. As a side note, many titanium reels sell for well over what was originally paid for them. I sold an LH Design Series C for almost twice what I paid for it and the Henschel Dual-mode titaniums are now bringing just about twice what they cost new a few years ago. Frankly, they're a better investment overall than a lot of the reincarnations of classic reels out there. |
