A little Granger help |

|
This evening on the place where people can bid on rods was an 8'special. The seller was great in his description and said he did not think it original as
had been described to him when he purchased it.He gave the ferrule sizes which were 18/ 12 not at all a 8040. I do not know them to well but I would guess it
would have had to have been a 9' rod cut down to the 8'length.Again just guessing I would think it would have to have a club like action.Help me
understand why someone paid over 400.00 for that rod?

Hi Dave,
I saw that and my thought was that the bidders were not very knowledgeable. It must have been a cut down 9 foot rod. The buyer will be disappointed in the action unless they know as little about rods as they do about Granger ferrule sizes. That's why learning all you can pays off in the long run. There's a similar situation with a Granger Favorite that sold for $410. Someone chopped off a 9 footer as the ferrules were 18 and 12. Also blackened the hardware. If you look at the photos of the female ferrule on the mid you can see that the ferrule is OBVIOUSLY oversized where it meets the cane. Looks just awful. The auction has ended, but search under Granger Favorite and check "completed items" and you'll find it. Gotta pay attention or you'll pay too much - sometimes, like the above cases, a LOT too much.

H-m-m-m, a cut down 9050, huh?
I'll have to agree with Michael--whoever buys it will probably have a hard time matching it with a line. 8-weights at 40 paces anyone? But if you carefully remove the tip top and chalk it up, chances are you could shoot a mean game of 9-ball with it! Sorry, it's a Monday.
Regards, Flyman

What about the person who bought a W&M Special 7' for $710. Sorry, but the never made Specials in a 7' configuration.

It's clear, Dave. The guy should be bidding on Heddons.
Then his keen understanding of ferrule sizes combined with his conviction that mids never (well hardly ever) get cut down by the desperate could be put to better use. |

Lets not be too hard on good old honest ignorance which is, of course, very correctable. It is just that, in this case, the tuition is expensive.

You're right, caneguy, about not being smug regarding this fellow's misadventure
