I have an opportunity to acquire an Orvis "Flea" kit rod (6'6" 4 wt 2pc 1 tip), reportedly built from a Madison kit from the early '70s, and I have a few questions for those in the know. 1) Was the Flea taper available in a Madison version? And as a kit from Orvis? 2) The cane is a dark chocolate brown in tone. Were Orvis rods available in this tone as well? I'm more familiar with the lighter colored blanks. 3) This kit rod comes with a black aluminum screw/downlocking reel seat (rather than the typical walnut screw lock) and a cigar (not superfine) grip. Do these sound like Orvis kit components? I'll try to post a pic later. Thanks ahead of time!

Posts: 942 04/28/2009 15:15	The answer to your numbers 2 and 3 is yes. I have an Orvis kit rod and the reelseat matches your description and its a cigar grip, with a dark finish.

Posts: 106 04/28/2009 15:30	My 1967 Orvis Catalog lists the 2 piece Orvis Flea as being available as a one tip blank with ferrules mounted for $42.00. An extra tip section was available for $22.00 They did not seem to come as part of a complete kit but the components you describe could all be purchased separately. Based on this it is quite possible that this blank was still available in the early 70's.

Posts: 2212 04/28/2009 17:30	If it is indeed the Flea model blank, both the 6 1/2' Flea and the 6 1/2' 6wt have a #10 ferrule, it will be a nice casting rod. While listed as a slow action, its short length transcribes into a rather brisk caster. It casts more 4wt than a 6 1/2' rod should. Cane
