Posts: 36 04/30/2009 15:51	Tags : None Just sharing a note on a modern builder - A.J. Thramer. I picked up a hollow built "clone" of a payne 101 Bought it blind …never seen a Thramer rod. Very nice. beautiful looking rod, the guides, the nice agate stripping guide, the ferules, color was nicely flamed ..very nicely finished. The fishability and casting performance was very solid. I was surprised. It fished a lot better than I thought it would in fact I was a little taken back by how "alive" & strong the rod felt as I was casting it. I was even getting a little daring by tightening up my loops and casting under branches … I was just a little surprised that I could generate enough energy to have the leader turnover and reach really deep under some over hanging branches. Very nice. I know there are many good builders and this one was very solid. I bought the rod to fill a quick need… but it is nice enough to hold onto (it realy fishes well). I'm on a long (multi year) waiting list for a builder who lives close to my home and the rod I have grown up with has become a bit tired (kind of falling apart)... Posts: 301 05/02/2009 18:53	Thramer was one of my bright star interviews for "Oregon Bamboo." The man is a gentleman. His rods are worthy of a place in every serious collectors rack. I haven't bought any Oregon made cane rods. I can say that. I do have a fine Kiley rod, which he gave me, pre-book. That soft sucking sound you just heard was me pulling the rock back over my hole after a little rain.

I see pictures of rods, I read notes about the collectibility for some rods but I never get the chance to cast the rods .... When I'm on the water I just don't see many people fishing with cane so I don't get the chance to watch or try rods other than my own .... and as you guys know just because something looks good doesn't necessarily mean that it is good (well at least as a fishing tool) . So I just wanted to share that I was bit overwhelmed how well it fished. Most of you have tremendous experience when it comes to the variety of rods, all I know is the rod I fish with and Mr. Thramers rod is a very beautiful rod.... best money I've spent in long time...I'm thankful I tripped over something exceptional ...just dumb luck on my part.

Posts: 10 05/02/2009 23:14	A number few years back AJ built (I believe) 3 sets of 4 rods with matching SR#'s for each set. The rods were renditions of Granger classics (7' 4wt, 7½' 4/5wt, 8' 5wt, 8½' 5/6wt). When I heard that set #001 was unfished and up for sale, I purchased them site unseen. I also own one of JA's Gillum's (7½' 5/6wt). They are sweeeeet! Absolutely beautiful, and like old friends in the hand. Last year I was able to have AJ and few others over to my cabin during the Metolious Bamboo Fair. I agree with Joe 100%, AJ is a gentleman-full of humor and wisdom! And in a world where I have fished rods at twice+ the price, he is a fantastic deal in owning the bamboo experience. Another Oregon boo builder that studied under AJ is Chris McDowell. If anyone ever gets the chance to fish one of his rods, they will never forget it! I own 3 of Chris' rods and can't think of enough praise to give them what they deserve. may the LORD bless and keep you... <'(((>{ garypaul

Posts: 38 05/03/2009 07:03	Greg ... I didn't take it that way ... I'm just a natural cynic and just because someone has experience doesn't necessarily translate into a good product. I see it at work all the time, the classic you either got it or you don't and a 50 years wouldn't help. My only experience is that of a fisherman & as you already know his rods fish beautifully ... I was wondering what makes for good if fishability? is it the result of good taper and good construction or good material selection? I suspect they all work together. and there is probably a knack for spotting good raw material....

Posts: 237 05/03/2009 08:49	Call AJ on the phone and ask him what he's up to, and he's likely to say, "Just makin' fishin' poles." He means it. He designs and builds fishing rods, not wall hangers, museum pieces or casting tools. He wants his rods to be fished, because that's what they are designed to do. I think if you told him you were buying one simply to place it in a collection, he'd refuse to sell it. IMO, this is the reason his rods "fish" so well. I own three: all 8-footers and all built on AJ's tapers; two for 5-weights and one hollowbuilt for a 4. All are versatile fishing rods as well as a pleasure to look at. EP

Posts: 549 05/03/2009 09:53	AJ's rods are the best deal in bamboo in my opinion. I don't know him as a person, although I have purchased the only new rod I own directly from him and he was very easy to deal with, but his rods speak for themselves. I don't know how the "new" makers survive who charge 1500 for a rod with just a few rods under their belt. You can still pick up a brand new Thramer DX for $800, that's pretty amazing for someone with 2000 rods built. There are very few makers with his knowledge and skill, period, especially that charge around 1k for a rod (Dave Male and Jennings just to name a couple other good deals. I'm sure there are more but I have seen a rod or two from these two fellas and they are very nice). There are some really high doller rods out there that I am sure may be worth it to some folks, but fish one of AJs rods and you might ask yourself why you would spend an extra grand to end up with a fishing rod no better, and often not as good, as a Thramer rod. It all boils down to whether you want a great fishing tool or a status symbol. I have put my small stream Thramer rod through hell and back and it is still straight as an arrow and, minus the couple battle scars, looks as good or better than the day I bought it (I think fish scales on the grip just make it more attractive). It used to be standard to say his rods were fishing tools and not full of the bling that some makers tend to focus on, but the newer rods he is producing are quite beautiful and the result is the total package; beautiful, well made fishing tools at a good price. Posts: 551 05/03/2009 20:40	Nice looking rod. I've never cast a Payne 101 taper but have heard it's a great rod. Would it work as a small stream rod in a pinch or do you consider it mainly a medium-large stream rod? Does it cast well in close? I once cast his 7'6" 5 wt 2/2 HB signature dry fly fly and it could toss the nicest loops; great all around dry fly rod for any stream. I wonder how the two compare. Posts: 40 05/03/2009 21:17	I fish a lot of small streams (10/15 ft wide) ....I roll cast a lot so I like the medium fast action and when I need to reach under some over hanging branches the rod is capable of letting me make the cast. I really like it though when I'm working a riffle...I usually use about 10 ft + tippet and sweep it through a run and its been working really well. I was looking for an all round 5 wt since I also fish a couple rivers and the occassional pond...flies range from humpies to midges and to nymphs....and when things are slow a wooly bugger. I've always like casting a 5wt. ( I enjoy it more when I use bigger flies). If I was not using the streamers or wooly buggers I agree I would go lighter. Posts: 1396 05/04/2009 03:43	That is a great looking rod by AJ . . . as always The 100 works really well on the small water and some medium water, the 101 dose well on medium size streams and can handle larger but is limited by the length of the rod. It may be more than you need on small fish, but we all have different styles and taste. I think it would compare them to the 7612 and 7613 by Dickerson rods regarding which water and fish they handle well. Alan

Posts: 553 05/04/2009 07:43	It sounds like you got yourself a perfect all around trout rod. I agree about 5 weights, they are a lot of fun and the most versatile in my opinion. I know the dry fly rod I cast of Thramers in the same configuration was fine with small trout because it had fairly fine tips, but plenty of wood in the butt section to handle a large fish if necessary. Enjoy your new rod!!

That's a rod that I would never get tired of just looking at and fondling. When you get one that is that pleasing to the eye, that fishes as well as it looks, it's a REAL keeper. What a treasure.... Posts: 583 05/04/2009 22:48	It's indeed heartwarming to see comments like these. To have a rodmaker of his stature making rods in my lifetime is something special. I may sound biased since if anyone has perused my website then you know that Allen makes my bamboo rods under the LCT banner, plus I carry his rods; the quality and experience that goes into these rods for the price tag is incredible. Over 2200 rods sold, his complete understanding of tapers, his knowledge is mind boggling, I could go on and on.................... Not to mention his unique depth and knowledge of beer I'm one of the few that I know of who will put up with his curmudgeness, I actually love the guy for it. They're the best made rods going for the money and that's a plain fact. Quick story I was at A.J.'s and we were working on my new line of "S" glass rods and I think we were drinking some beer and sampling some local smoked gouda and A.J. had that faraway look in his eyes. What I didn't realize was that he was thinking about how to make the rods even better. He grabbed a blank, put it together and spent about 15 seconds waving it around after which he exclaimed "that's it". If you want to know what makes my "Deluxe" series so special you'll have to buy one. Or cast one at the Metolius. Dan

Posts: 57 05/05/2009 17:48	Pete, I have to say that I have two AJ Thramer rods and LOVE them both. I also have a Payne taper - not hollow built - but 8', for 5 weight. GREAT rod!!!! And I have a FE Thomas Fairy, 6' 8" 3 weight - perfect for the conditions I use it and a fine casting tool. As another replier noted, I think AJ's rods are a great value for the price, and will even go as far as saying they are extremely well done rods, price considerations aside. BUT, I might add that a very good friend of mine has been waiting almost a year for two rods now promised him delivery in less than a couple months. Ed
