I will apply a bit of light oil to the inside of the bag, rub it on the reel and this will keep the reel from becoming white when the reel is exposed to the
wet weather or longer periods between outings.

Soft Leather Reel Bag |
Lead | ||
|
I thought I would mention/show this reel bag. It was at a farmers market, as a small coin/jewelry pouch, and I asked the guys if he would make me a couple to
fit 3 3/4 " fly reels. This is what it looks like and for $8 bucks you can't go wrong. The leather is so soft and would be especially good for the
leaded reels; it can do the job of the syvelt bags that are getting tougher to find.
I will apply a bit of light oil to the inside of the bag, rub it on the reel and this will keep the reel from becoming white when the reel is exposed to the
wet weather or longer periods between outings.

gary , well thats just great , you and nacky should get togeather and start a fly fishing company , your both just full of great idea's and heck you both like salmon fishing and light sticks , myself i think a fine reel like your hardy deserves to be put in the correct syvelt hardy bag , your bag , that is what it is , a $8.00 bag , i just don't understand , funny have a sweet 4 to $600 reel and such a cheep looking bag , be like having a whole bunch of gut eyed salmon flies and put them in your wife's ring box , just don't do it for me , one's taste in his reels says alot of the person , your so called reel bag to me is for putting your split shot in for nymphing not that nice hardy reel of yours , spend a little bit of your musty ol money and buy a nice leather case or one of enigma 309 reel bag , now thats just my 2 cents ,

Rich, this is a nice solution in every respect, it is cheap, keeps the reels safe and serves the purpose of a syvelt bag. It would look out of place in a
"Hardy Only" collection but it has Dingley written all over it. It is cheaper than Hardy branding, as Dingley was, and will serve its intended
purpose. I might even have a bit of Dutch flowing in my veins because I feel good about this "Bargain".

I've always found leather to be abrasive. I hope you don't damage your finish with the bag.
I just use Crown Royal bags, which I seem to have quite a lot of.
Perhaps a Crown bag inside a leather bag?

oh ,
i had to take a double looky , i didn't see any dingley going into that spit shot bag , looked like a hardy to me , and now after the double look i see why you would put that hardy in it , a chunk of the frame is missing off the reel , lets see you use it for your like new 3 inch dingley perfect , say goodby to the finish on that reel after awhile , all i'm saying is you can pick up good deals on them hardy syvelt bags , or even a nice block leather case , that purse will soak up the water and if you oil the inside of it , your going to have a mess i think , again just my 2 cents , the crown bags work good , i have used them myself ,

The leather bags are nice, but what a small world! Crown Royal bags hold several of my reels.

bow river wrote:This is a "quote" from the 1928 Hardy catalogue: All parts should be cleaned, and coated with "Reel Oil" to prevent oxidation. Reels made of aluminum throw of a whitish oxide after being wet. This can easily be removed by drying all parts, and rubbing with selvyt on which a little oil has been sprinkled. Now Rich, the leather is very soft and leather does not have a tendency to react with oil chemically, but rather soak it up so it should be a nice "reservoir" for this sprinkled oil. Now selvyt will remove imperfections in metal to bring back the "original" look, this can only be done at the expense of the finish. |

MFRS:
I gotta agree with my friend BHB. Those reel bags are fine and a very nice and yet economical suggestion. I've seen a few at local gun shows. Next time I'll pay more attention. Besides, they remind me of the "marble bags" of my youth. Gee, the leather didn't seem to hurt the marbles! But you must remember, when it comes to the Little Forum That Time Forgot...many is the time when no good deed ever goes unpunished! Take it in stride. Regards, Flyman

my 2 cents comes from making that same mistake , i have had the finish come off a reel , same as i have had the finish come off by useing wd 40 , i'm not
saying the bag is no good , there is no reason to soak a reel in oil , if it's wet dry it out and lighty oil it , then put back in the bag , i just find it
funny that a reel worth great big money is not worth the little bit to have it in a correct bag or leather case ,
this to me is like haveing a dickerson rod and putting a korea made reel on it , just not my cup of tea , some reels deserve a little bit better i think , heck if it's just a bag to store it in then a plastic bag will do the trick , another way so you might get it , or understand my 2 cents BHB , be like you ordering 3 super large pizza's , and a small ''diet'' coke to wash it down ,

These bags are "PERFECT" for me, I researched it a bit but I am open to opinions from members to give me valuable insight. If I read something that raises a "red flag" I will look at it. I am so open-minded to accept constructive criticism as this forum has vast resources, who wants to re-invent the wheel. gary , one's taste in his reels says alot of the person , i know your reels gary and i still have the hardy 2 7/8 i got from you , i know you have that little mint 3 inch dingley that once was mine , your taste in reels is same as alot of us , thats all i was trying to come across , we both collect ol english reels and dingleys mostly , i also know your rods and the fish you chase , was only saying in my words you have classy taste in your reels on your bag , leather bag , marble bag , spitshot bag , reel bag , call it whatever , if your happy with it then thats all that matters , i have done that leather bag and the oil inside like you say years ago , imho and again only my opinion and you take it for what it is , you soak the innards with oil , the finish will come off over time , not only that the oil will get on your line , bad news if useing silk ,even bad on plastic , oil will get on your hards when you take it out , on your cork when you put reel on rod , just a mess all the time bag is ok but i'd not soak the innards of it in oil , dry your reel , then a light coat of oil ,let it sit out for a day to dry and make sure the oil you use don't take off the lead finish , alot of the older english reels finish is gone because of time and oil cleaning , i made alot of mistakes when i first started collecting reels , learned the hard way myself , this forum wasn't around then for alot of us , so was by trial & error ,

Scientific Angler's used to sell buckskin bags like that for their series of System reels (Hardy Marquis or Viscount reels, engraved with SA brand logo.) I
have one. Works good.
Any bag is better than none, as far as cushioning from bumps and falls. I buy those cordura nylon camera bags for my reels, whenever I find them cheap at yard sales or thrift stores.

Gary - nice bag, how about you just find a very well used one and then stamp a 'D' somewhere on the inside?
btw it is not dissimilar to the ones that my Bogdan's live in and I find them extremely usable and useful, I have not found any at $8 new but have found a couple for similar money on yabe in suede. I use them for reels being carried in a fishing bag - less bulky than hard cases - and do what they need to do which is to prevent scratching and minor damage - I like them.

The lack of padding makes me nervous for travel. However I freely admit to gear protection / maintenance paranoia. If I dropped or accidentally bumped a reel
out of the back of the vehicle while loading gear, I think a cased reel handles this better. I have a couple that came with bags and have always added a
padded case of some sort. If you move your gear in a bag of some sort and are likely to put your reel safely away with your rod first (watching the car lean
get vest / waders off then pack rod dance makes me twitch ) it will be fine I'm sure. My reels that came with original cases stay in them and I usually
look for the correct one if I can find one on the cheap (not often) I have a number of padded zipper cases made by fishpond that I found at a small shop that
was sadly having hard times and had them 40% off. But I have been accused of being overly prepared/ geared in most cases. On a recent trip to east tn with
the fly club I brought complete outfits 4-7 wt a b/u 5 wt and a b/u reel as well as an emergency maint/ repair kit. Most of my gear is bagged / padded /
swaddled excessively. I will also point out that on a recent trip when a spring broke on a buddies reel all laughter at my emergency kit stopped when I
produced a pawl and spring that would fit.....I think they are nice looking bags and really like the price but for me....I prefer padding.
