Small, light, quiet, inexpensive reel suggestions |
Lead | ||
|
Well my buddy, Tim, made me a two weight rod and I've ordered a 2 wt. line but I need a reel. The reel needs to be small (to balance the rod's
proportions), light (under 3.5 oz.), quiet ( doesn't have to be silent but quiet, to irk BHB's sensibilities *G*), and not too expensive (it's a
brookie rod). The reel doesn't have to be a "classic" but not too out there. A Ross Evolution fits the bill pretty well although it is pretty
modern looking, has a disc drag (which isn't needed, although disc drags tend to be quiter than most click and pawls) and is not inexpensive (but cheaper
than a lot of "classic" reels). Another possibility that comes to mind is a Loop/Danielsson Midge, although it's a bit too futuristic for a
bamboo rod.

I have always liked the smaller Meisselbach-Catucci 370 reels for light rods. Great look and light, but watch out for cracks.

I use the smallest Galvan reel on my 2wt's.
http://www.highsierrarods.com/reels.html Its a beautiful color green, has an almost silent disk drag, and balances well. PM me if you're interested in discussing further. Rick |

A nice Young built J. Austin Forbes from that auction site.
Or the original Jubilee -
This, the smallest Jubilee at 3", weighs 3.25oz. The Forbes versions come in smaller sizes. Regards, Doc

Orvis Battenkill 3/4. Get the one made by Hardy and you are Golden. Even the newer BFR reels are very nice and a good deal.

Also, the Lamson Litespeed and cousins. They look good on cane and you can disengage the clicker.

The Redington Ct may be just right and there was a 2/3 for sale on the Fiberglassflyrodders board recently.

Hard to get lighter than the JAF Avon - gets my vote and comes in smaller sizes than the 3" - 2-1/2" and 2" - if you're looking to match an
ultralight rod.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Spruce, since acquiring my state-of-the-art hearing aids, right-and-left-ear-wind, and becoming able to amp up at will, I'm no longer such a stickler about reel rumble the louder the better. In fact, I've a suggestion for a reel that meets all your criteria, including the "not too expensive," which has been open to freewheeling interpretation by forum plutocrats who evidently hunkered down and escaped shelling during the economic Armageddon going on all around them. Try a Teton Tioga #2 (I saw one, mint, go for about 50 bucks at a recent auction) or, even better, a regular Teton #3, which weighs in at exactly 3.5 oz. The company itself went under, sad to say, but the reels are still widely available. They are light, quiet, handsome, well-designed, and even in the smaller sizes have a remarkable drag system which could easily halt any brookie for which you've a mind to fish. Moreover, the Teton reel, unlike its company, is totally submersible. It can go under without damage to its innards, making it a good choice for the salt too. This means that should you tire of brookies, you could go after grunion with impunity as they head shoreward on their spawning run and frolic along the beach by the light of the moon, the moon, the moon. Yes, you could. What a wonderful image.

spruce grouse , i had that same reel teton , and it was a sweet little reel , i'll second that choice with BHB , he knows what he's talking about ,
first time i heard the company went under , but it's a well built reel and if you could get one for $50 bucks , it will stop them little fish easy for ya
, you should bring that 2 wt with you for a backup rod on the bow trip, i'd like to video you with a nice fish on it

The 2 7/8" Meisselbach Airex Ablette 370 already mentioned- or the dual pawl version, which comes in metallic gray, rather than the old gold frame with
silver-white spool 370- is a nice little fly reel. It's a spring click-pawl reel, but the Meisselbachs are the most nicely pitched and smooth design that
I've found, especially for the price. I own a few Young Beaudex reels that are tuned as nicely, but they're usually much louder, and they're much
heavier. I've watched the Airex Ablette models continue to climb in price, but they typically run $35-$70 depending on paint and cosmetic condition, unless
you find one in mint or near-mint condition with a box and papers. If you get the single spring-pawl 370, be advised that you can change the direction of
retrieve by flipping the pawl over.
The Hardy Bougle 3" Lightweight III is still too heavy for your specs. And the check is louder, although it's quite smooth. Surprising bargain-basement find- the Gayle Simplicity No. 2, a basic basic Kentucky style reel with a caliper check and a caged spool. The one I had favored LHW, and was nice and smooth when lubricated. The tension on payout was just about perfect for brookie fishing, too. typically. $10-$20. The H-I Vernley is a 3" Bakelite-frame & spool reel, and nice and light as a result. As long as the caliper check and the click button are in good shape, they're another lightly sprung reel with "2-weight" brookie drag tension. The ones I've had worked equally well for either LHW or RHW. In more modern reels, I like the smallest Ross Cimarron, which is a silent reel.

Thanks for all the great suggestions on-line and the offers off-line. Currently the JA Forbes Avon and the Abel TR Light are topping the list of
possibilities.

Although these Lamson reels have not been made in several years, there are plenty still around. I use the LP-1 Light (click and pawl non adjustable) on my 2 wt. These are very well made reels and can be picked up used for less than $100.... |

I own two Browning Black Canyon reels that I bought on clearance from bass pro shops.
They small 3/4 reel weighs in at 2.8 oz. it is lightweight and has a good drag. They aren't selling them anymore, but I just wanted to throw this one into the mix as well, if you can still find one.
or a tioga, those are great, too. |
