Posts: 807 04/27/2009 18:04	Tags : None Hi I just picked up a first edition and signed copy of the William Mershon's book Recollections of my Fifty Years Hunting and Fishing at a garage sale. Though I am a avid book collector I have never heard of William Mershon and was shocked when I looked up the value of the book. It is a good read especially when he devotes a chapter to catching grayling in Michigan. Can anyone out there shed any light on why this book is so expensive and can anyone recommend a book collector of dealer that would be interested in purchasing the book. Would think it might be a hot item for people that are interested in Michigan Hunting and Fishing history. Are there any book dealers in Michigan that might specialize in fishing and or hunting books Thanks Bob at bohemianflyfish@aol.com

Posts: 68 05/07/2009 09:16	Willliam B Mershon was one of Saginaw Michigans' lumber barons. More money came out of the Saginaw Valley than all the gold mined in California. Saginaw was a center for this trade, its timber rebuilt Chicago after the fire, and supplied much of the lumber for the western expansion. He was a conservationist who had a strong interest in hunting and fishing, and for his trips out west he had his own pullman car to transport him and his friends. He also had a lodge on the north branch of the AuSable. The Saginaw chapter of TU is named after him. The Lovells Michigan museum had Wm B and his life and times as their opening day theme last year. The Hoyt library in Saginaw MI may also have Wm B artifacts/history. The "Recollections" book is desireable from a historical persective, as is his history on the "Passenger Pigeon" and its demise. He was a conscientious employer and beleived in such as health care and nutrition for his workers, when this was not the norm, and went against the practices of the day. Posts: 809 05/07/2009 18:27	Dewardian Thanks for the overview of Mershon. It's represented in his book but I did not know he was also a great advocate for the common man. The book is a fun read and the old pictures of the hunting trips and the little locomotive used for fishing and hunting trips was impressive. Really liked the history on catching grayling in Michigan. I had no idea the book was so collectible when I bought it. Thanks Bob
