Posts: 391 05/04/2009 10:03	Rich, I do enjoy classic reels, as classic as I can afford. The hard leather case is the safest in some conditions, but if you don't have these, as I attest to, this is a nice alternative. It gives very little bump/drop protection but it has a handle, unlike the hard leather case, fits in the glove box nicely and conforms to small spaces better. If it is in a car accident tight in a glove box, this beats the hard case on the passenger seat or on the floor somewhere. This handle acts like a lanyard also, so you have it around your wrist, cup the reel in your hand, voila. I have applied wax to your reel Rich, this is the route I will most likely go to protect my leaded reels from the whitish residue. Your climate is usually so dry there so for your Hardy I sold you, this is probably over-kill, for the East Coast this is the perfect solution, the worst-case climate scenarion for my fishing conditions. The oil will be used on moving parts, the wax on the outer shell and bagged for fishing trips, see Rich I like good advice!! Gary

I've been playing with little wooden hinged-lid boxes from a craft store, about 5"x5". I'm going to line them with velvet or something. They're too big for my fishing bag though. When I match wits with a trout, I usually lose...

Posts: 417 05/10/2009 10:51	oldboyscout, I would look at putting some type of cushioning material (ie. foam) behind that velvet as wood does not absorb impact near as well as hard leather, the impact will transfer to your reel I suspect. Good luck, hope you find a nice solution. Gary

Posts: 112 05/25/2009 00:18	I like the idea of do it yourself and sometimes it works... it works for you and that is all it counts. From the river to house should be fine if your careful. The bag will protect the reel from scratches but will not do a good job of protecting the reel handle from weight on it that could bend it out of shape. Recently I bought a few Hardy neoprene cases that are about $20.00 and are 4mm thick. Good looking and come in three sizes...

Posts: 145 06/17/2009 17:06	I am a BIG fan of the selvyt bag. They are good looking, practical and easy to handle and when you wrap the reel in a piece of extra cloth or felt before you place it in the bag, it is also reasonably protected. I have been hunting for vintage Hardy selvyt bags first, then switched to the later blue/grey bags which are actually as close a remake of the originals as can be (I actually cut away the modern "House of Hardy" labels from the outside of the modern bags - the old ones had rod-in-hand labels on the inside). Since the blue/grey bags also got more and more expensive (I have quite a few reels to house....) I tried to find someone to make me such bags. Almost everyone I talked to sent me away as the bags supposedly (- I can´t even sew a button to a shirt...) are pretty labour intensive and not so easy to make. I finally started looking for cloth samples to fit the original bags and I got pretty close at a wholeseller´s warehouse 2 weeks ago. In that place I also met a woman who offered to make me a few such bags from the cloth I bought for reasonable money. I should pick up the sample bags soon and I sincerely hope that they will be really close to the Hardy originals that I gave her as a reference. Should they turn out nice, I will try to post some pictures here. Cheers, Andy
