In that thread it is indicated that by using Adobe Illustrator, it would be possible to recreate a replacement decal for the rod being restored. It can be done, as I have a friend that made one for a Rapidan and it looks perfect. My question is about the ethics of making a replacement decal. I am currently rebuilding a Montague "Little Smokey" (7.5') which has just enough decal remaining so that it can be correctly identified. Is it ethical to create a replacement decal for the rod.
I carefully scraped around the outline of the decal so that it or the original outline remains. The rest of the finish was removed and will be renewed when I finish the wraps. I am using the correct colors for the wraps but I am adding several more guides with proper spacing. I created a decal that only says "Little Smokey" in a small rectangular yellow box with black letters that I plan to place on the rod. I see no problem with this, but what if I were to replicate the original decal. Is it ethical to do so as part of the restoration.
