One of my first (expensive) antique rods that I purchased came from Germany nearly 7-8 years ago if I vaguely recall. When I first inspected it, it was such a
bizarre looking beast. The butt section weighed nearly TWO POUNDS and was made of oak I believe. It has a black linen cord grip and is around 4 sections and
12-15ft long (sorry, going from memory as I haven't looked at this rod in over 5 years ) and it is numbered under 150 (either 114 or 144 or something like
that). This Salmon rod is well before the current Orvis numbering system. The butt cap is well marked and the line guides are large decorative agate lined
guides. The rest of the sections are a light colored turned wood. Unfortunately one of the tips is short and a guide or two needs to be rewrapped but I've
been hesitant to work on this beauty.
My question is, does anyone know of any earlier rods than this one?
I'll post a photo next week sometime as I dig through my collection looking for my other Varneys.
