That was supposed to happen two years ago. Amazingly, of all the products Orvis sells, bamboo rods are always on the top ten list of backordered items. It
seemed silly to some that repairs took up so much production time and brought in so little money.

All good things must come to an end, I guess.
I was always amazed at the low cost of bamboo repairs/restorations at Orvis. Nevertheless, I'm sure Charlie and his crew will continue to do excellent and worthwhile work. Regards, Flyman

Processed a repair through Orvis one month ago. Had the rod at my doorstep 2 weeks after they received it. Amazing service - the repair cost was very very
reaonable as usual. Had to send a letter on that one.

That WAS called "customer service"... one of the reasons that Orvis is still around. Without that, just another chink out of the
mortar. The last quote I got from Orvis about 4-6 months ago was about what you'd expect to pay a good maker... and that was with the discount. At that
time I began wondering what was going on....

Greg Comar, who's been with Orvis for about 30 years, does most of the cane work. If you're up there take the tour.

I was in the Manchester store yesterday. While trying out one of their cane rods, I joked about the "lifetime warranty". That got me thinking about
how much a replacement tip would cost, in the event that I trashed one beyond repair. The salesman refused to give me a hint, instead stating that repairs
could be as low as $30. I then specifically overstated the question so there was no mistake that I meant a tip top replacement, but I got the same vague
answer. Then there followed a fair degree of hard sell, more than I thought was warranted just for trying out a rod. I felt uncomfortable, something that
doesn't ever happen to me in my local fly shop. It's not the Orvis I remember going into years ago.
Incidentally, the place was like a morgue. I was one of about three people in the entire store, and that's got to be depressing for the employees given the size of the place. |
