Flyman, would you go as far as to say that it is your opinion (after owning hundreds of Grangers) that all Granger
Aristocrats were originally wrapped in the exact same color of Rice's Beige/Tan silk thread and that these variations in color (described by people in all
kinds of different ways) from one Aristocrat to another are likely due to aging of varnish, exposure to light, oxidation, chemical reaction, etc? Or, do you
believe it is possible that there may have been a period in which a variation in thread colors or manufacture was used? I also own a GG Special 8040 with gold
colored thread; Not green. This may also be due to varnish influence however I'm not certain. I'm tempted to remove one of the wraps on my rod to see
what is underneath but am still not confident in being able to reproduce it

Hi SWMTfisher: Sure, anything is possible including the use of thread by Granger from various manufacturers over the years. But yes, I think the effects of varnish,
environment and time are more likely to cause the color changes noted. It's just my opinion, though.

Sorry mine is a victory not a deluxe. But IMHO the 7030 is one of the all time great tapers. I love that rod more than almost any other I own. I
frequently use it when another longer heavier rod might let me fish the bigger flies further away might be the proper choice. It dances in my hand and has far
more reserve than many 7 footers I have owned.

another comment on thread variation on the aristocrat.hopefully i will be forgiven also for variation from the thread. I have one of the original 900yrd
spools but have found it to be too dark for most restorations. what i have found that matches perfectly on most aristocrats is YLI # 100.once color preserver
and new varnish is applied it matches. just a little tidbit for future restorers.

Michael,
Thanks for the info. I meant to write GG instead of GC. Dennis |

Michael,
It doesn't matter I'm used to it. Looking forward to your new " Colorado Classic Cane " book. My book is starting to look pretty scruffy. Dennis |

PaducahMichael wrote:OK, Guys - I've been studying again and getting familiar with the time lines and such and here's a flash for you: The Granger Registered AND the Granger Two-Piece rods were introduced in the 1939 catalog. I'm sitting here looking at it. ( and wishing I could buy that 2 piece Registered for $75, or the DeLuxe at $37.50 - or even the Aristocrat at $22.50. Heck, at that price, send me a dozen... of each.) Oh - and don't look for the 1939 catalog in CCC. It's not in there. Neither is the 1923/24 or the 1927/28 (color) catalog. You'll have to wait for Colorado Rodmakers of the Past & Present to see those.

Returning to the original topic of this thread, I can now post photos of my DeLuxe. It was restored some years ago by Don Schroeder. It had been run over and
restored at least once before it came to him. The sliding band reel seet was badly dented and the inscription gone. He was able to identify it as a DeLuxe by
the pattern of ghost wraps. The rod is a fast 4 wt or a medium fast 5 wt. I lightly sanded the grip with 600 grit to get rid of grime and some ridges.

Southbranch,
Pretty rod and a fine restoration by Don. How do like the way it cast? Thanks for the post. Dennis |

I've only lawn cast it so far, but it is a fast, tip-flex rod that can throw DT 5 line with ease. From what I'd read, I expected it to be a
full-flexing 4 wt.

Southbranch,
Thanks for the photos. Its a beautiful rod. Enjoy it on those spring creeks in the Driftless Area. I love Grangers and the 7030 is a great little rod. Bob |

Granger ferrule's | #37 | ||

I am considering building a 7030, can anyone tell me what size ferrule it requires? Any suggestions on what type of new ferrule should be used to be as close
to the original as possible? Thanks.

7030 ferrule | #38 | ||

7030's use a 12/64 ferrule.
Granger (and Phillpson) ferrules were drawn and non-serrated. You might want to contact John Pickard. He's been selling a number of unused Granger-style ferrules on the unnamed internet auction site which he obtained when he purchased the rod shop of Jim Schaaf. Finally you could use the male tip ferrules and female mid ferrule off a Granger 9050. They are pretty common and use the same #12 size. Regards, Scott
