Dingley Reel Handles |
Lead | ||
|
Seems several Dingley reels are showing up in various places with replacement handles, and sellers are either not aware or chose to ignore it in their
listings. Here is what an original Dingley handle looks like: (actual handle material may vary between ivorine, ernoid, ebonite, etc.).

Go, Tom! You're spot on. Interestingly, there are are simply NO variations. All Dingley handles conform to this pattern & have screw-type spindles with
a brass tub. Any Dingley found with a Hardy-type handle has a replacement handle.

I've found nothing definite about when handle colors shifted from white (or faux ivory) to black. Dingley reel handles probably made the transition around
the same time as Hardy, but not necessarily. In general, from the 1930s on, handles were black. But I own several gorgeous Dingleys from the late 30s that have
original white handles. The period of "transition" for Dingley reels from white to black seems to have lasted more than a decade.
I personally haven't seen any white-handled Dingleys from the very late 1930s on... |

The moment you render an opinion around here, everyone piles on! Thanks for the examples. May we conclude that black AND white handles were used on Dingleys
throughout a 40-year period? :-)

Dennis, if that's an original box, is it marked in any way?

pcg wrote:No markings. The top was originally sealed with a paper tab. Cannot confirm it is original to the reel -- the PO said his father had it stored in a cupboard for a long time. May be more than you want to know -- but it is two piece construction, stapled, one part is made from A flute and the other from B flute corrugated. (from my work in the packaging business) Dennis |

Green handle on the reel | #12 | ||

I thought I read a few replies back that the green knobs where from earlier reels.. Here is my Dingley reel.
Brass ring line guard and it is heavy. ![]()

PURE speculation Gents.
Just like they say: A fish story (reel story) without documentation/provenance is just a story! It is what fisherman do. Awaiting the definite provenance, Tom and Patrick. Markets are not entities arsing out of the blue moon. Maidens create them as they travel from one garage sale to another...... Greg "Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The River was cut by the World's great Flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time... Under the rocks are the words and some of the words are theirs." Maclean |

I feel for you Flyman Dan. I bought a Horseshoe Westley Richards with a riveted handle,fine to use but not so good for resale,so know the feeling. Nice reel
still and yours has an agate too so can see putting a handle on it too keep her spinning. I was happy to hear that the green handles are ok,I hope you were,nt
kidding Rich.I got a couple of them too. I guess collecting Dingleys isn,t all roses,I,ve got pricked a bit too. I,m looking forward to the book on Dingleys as
will sort some of this out and help us guys out. This forum has a lot of info as well and has helped me a lot. Just need to remember info and study pic,s ,not
everyone knows or tells everyhing all the time. Thanks for info on handles . Daryl

oh yes i remember seeing that reel , a wonderfull dingley with red agate , and yes i remember you pulling the trigger finger fast on it and then finding out the handle was not correct and was not a screw post but solid post for the handle and the worse is ,it's sitting in a tub , just not brass , i keep looking and hoping to find a broken reel for cheep so you can switch it back over , they just don't come up , a good reel to fish with and even to collect as lots of finish on it , if you could just get that handle and correct tub , someday one will show up

I've been looking for the post and tub too...seems like an impossible task thus far. It is always good to have friends helping with a search thought to
say the least!
Yeah...I shot that one down probably a second after it was up. Right after Flymandan could be seen doing a fast paced victory lap around the neighborhood. Then when I returned to my house some emails were shot off in my excitement letting a few of you know of the find. The emails that were received in reply stating that I got burned quickly turned the tears on since the reel was my College graduation present. If I can't learn from here then I'm not sure where I can learn from. |

FlymanDan wrote: FlymanDan, if I were in your situation, I would take my next $200.00 and go for a white handle Walker Bampton (WB), use the handle to "authenticate" your Dingley and have Highfields send a replacement to fit the WB. Maybe then auction the WB on yabe to recover some of your cost or just keep it as a spare, they make good spares. You need to think that you bought the toughest things to replace on your reel, the handle is a mere inconvenience, that's all.

FlymanDan, I think MFRS offers good advice here. Your reel is just spectacular, and with a little more investment and effort you might feel a lot better about
it. If that beauty of a reel was mine, I would not rest until it was made "right"! The actual handle material looks to be a beautiful piece of real
Ivory? I'm sure Bill Archuleta would help with the replacement once you have secured the parts- you might want to give him try.
http://www.archuletasreelworks.com/ Best of luck to you in your quest and I congratulate you on the acquisition of this fine reel. You have a keeper! Regards, Tom |
