I agree, that the heavier, i.e., thicker, stiffer backing is best - not for strength but, to mitigate the "cut in" factor. And, because,
it is used, mostly, in light line fishing to take up space on the spool..
If smaller diameter backing is required to get more yardage on a reel where "larger than intended for that reel game" may be encountered - -
- whether a size 1 or 2 reel where 15+" fish are a sincere possibility, or a size 6 reel used with 7 for stripers or bones where redfish might hop on - -
- backing as thick for the desired test while still fitting on the reel in the desired yardage, and on the stiffer side, may prove beneficial if you should run
deep into the backing.
I like the Berk, and it is cost effective. Had problem only once with micron decades ago. Can't remember if it was 20# or if it was available as 12#,
perhaps 12. Didn't lose a fish over it though. I just happened to observe - while I was changing the line out on that spool one day - that it had, at some
time, dug in on itself.
