5wt taper suggestions? |
Lead | ||
|
I'm narrowing in on my "go to" rod. I have built a 209E and an 8013 which fish and cast well, but for northern Arkansas and southern Missouri
tailwaters I feel like I want something right in the middle maybe-nothing on the slow side. Streamer fishing is not required of this next rod, but it is
likely some small/medium nymphs with indicators will be used and all sizes of dries. Any favorites tapers like this?
Thanks, Mark Bendel |

take the slower 8013 from howels book and take off .005 from each station on the" butt "only, and i think you might get what you want.steve

Thanks for the input Steve. What type of ferrule would you use?

Look into Don Andersen's 7'9" for a fiver. Don is a fishing machine and he can cast very well. His taper is hard to beat. Taper is on rodmakers
tips web site.

Mark,
What length rod are you looking for? I consider those my home waters and usually fish the Taney, White, Norfork etc with either a 7' 6" two piece rod or 8' three piece. Happy to offer suggestions for both. Harry |

.005.steve

Thanks Harry- I'm looking for a 7'9"-8' two-piece. I'm not opposed to stretching or shrinking a taper.

Mark,
A Payne 102 or a Dickerson 8013 would be hard to beat. Harry |

Harry- Haven't made a Payne taper yet so I will look into the 102. Do you have a favorite version and ferrule style to share? I'll bring it to SRG this
fall and maybe they can turn the water off for a couple minutes.

Mark,
I've never actually made a Payne 102, so can't answer with certainty. But most Payne tapers work best when the big end of the tip is smaller than the small end of the butt thus necessitating some sort of drop over the ferrules. |

Mark,
There was a previous thread here that I started about the Dickerson 8013 and the Payne 102. The consensus was that the Payne 102 from Maurer's book was the one to use. I am actually working on a hollow version of that rod, if I can ever stop playing with my new Little Giant beveler. Cheers, Jay |
