Do UV rays affect silk fly lines in the same way as plastic lines or monofilament, i.e. degrades them?

My understanding is that silk does not photodegrade like mono. My experience with silk leaders vs mono seems to bear this out. Some of my silk fly lines
have far outlived plastic lines already (some were already many years old when I got them).

Don't know about the silk fibers themselves, but the oils and varnishes in the finish of the line will almost certainly degrade with UV light. I certainly
wouldn't leave an expensive silk line in sunlight while it's not in use.

Here is a link to describe the affects of UV on silk under controlled experiments. Just for a bit of info. before you read the attached link, the UV
wavelength that reaches the earths surface is 280-400nm.

Well it looks like what I have read is wrong ( It was far less technical fishing articles). It seems that it just must photodegrade much slower than the
plastics...... very interesting. My Grandad used to say no day is wasted if you learn something.

All organic polymers will be degraded by UV. The question is how fast.
