I'm a newbie here, but I plan on spending a lot of time.
Here's my dilemma.
Back in 2002, I purchased two bamboo rods by Jim Becker from the then named Battenkill Fly Shop in Manchester, VT. I fished the 7ft 4 wt twice, and I never fished the 6 1/2 ft 2 wt.
I haven't been in the water for four years ( playing way too much golf ), and I was going to sell the bamboo and keep all my graphite. Then I decided to start fishing again, so I stepped into the yard and cast the bamboo to refresh my memory.
Well, as I'm sure you all can guess, the synthetic rods will be on E-Bay soon, and there is no way I will ever part with the bamboo by Jim Becker. Just unbelievable casting and fishing tools ( though, since I've never been on the water w/ the 2 wt, I'm a little concerned as this is a sweet LITTLE rod, and I'm used to horsing my fish in with my graphite rods to minimize their stress, but I'll learn to adapt ).
Well, since I can't locate Walt and the Fly Shop in Manchester ( I'm assuming the evil empire (( only kidding )) Orvis put them under ), and I need to contact Jim for several reasons, the first of which is this.
The 4 wt is a two piece, two tip rod, but the 2 wt is a single tip rod, and this winter I want Jim to make me a second tip. I cast this rod w/ my Monic 3 wt clear line, and since I usually cast 10-25 ft, it was pure magic. BUT, the rod is rated for a DT2, so I'm thinking that a DT2 may be even better. I would like to talk to Jim to get his thoughts and to firm up getting another tip this winter. I want to get a Phoenix silk line, and I'd like to get his thoughts on this. Everything I've read about silk has me salivating, but @ $ 250.00/pop, I can't buy a couple and experiment.
So, here's where you can help.
How can I get in touch with Jim ?
And I would like to get your thoughts on the fly line issue w/ these rods. I will of course, rely on the collective wisdom of this group, and what do you think of the realtive merits of true silk, vrs the imitation Cortalnd or Monic clear or the new MDT, for those of you who may have compared..
I am, I hate to admit, relatively lazy. But if you guys convince me that true silk is WAY better then the Cortland or Monic, I will bite the bullet and go for it, and of course, I'm hoping that someone can help me get in touch w/ Jim.
As always, thanks for your help,
Crazy Bill
