Reel advise |

Hopefully I should be getting a new Summers 275 rod in the next couple of years and I want a nice reel to suit the rod. The two reels that I had in mind were
either a new Orvis CFO or a older LRH featherweight. Any opinions?

I have both. The "new" CFO is an offset disc drag design, so it weighs about 3/4 oz more by comparison with the same size click-pawl, like the old
CFO, for instance. The Featherweight has good line capacity for its size, and is pretty much bulletproof. Sent you a Pmail. -CC

Welcome to the forum ! I like the older CFO's click and pawl style. One of rhe great all time reels, a III would be very useful size. The also will go up in value as the years go by. |

I not sure what I'm going to get yet. I was disappointed last night when I did some research on the CFO
to find out that they have moved manufacturing to China/Korea. I was under the impression that they were made in the UK. Not that it means that the reel is
of less quality butt it's just another nail in the coffin for the manufacturing base here and back home. I do like Orvis equipment but it does burn my but
when I buy a $330 pair of waders and they have "Made in China" on the box. But this is a discussion for another thread I guess.

Buy both and sell the one you like least.

but if I were choosing between the Orvis CFO (click/pawl) and a Hardy LRH Lightweight, the Lightweight would get my nod.
They're both fine reels, but I prefer the look of the Hardy, plus it weighs a little more than the equivalent CFO. bobbyg

You can pick up a hardy marquis pretty cheaply. They have a palming rim and are good looking. Most times you can get a nice one in good shape under $200 and
sometimes under $150. You can also sometimes find a good deal on one of the older CFO's made in UK. No doubt the CFO is a great reel.

I like a 3" St George. A nice three screw example. I use one to balance my Pickard 765 Perfectionist.

CFO III | #9 | ||

I recently picked up an older CFO III, the one with the spool pillar screw. When I first picked it up I was struck by how light it is. Initially I thought it
might be too light but as it turns out I love the way my 7 1/2' rods feel with this reel on them. I can feel the rod better than with my heavier reels (St.
George, Perfects, Dingley etc). When I put the heavier reels back on, the rods feel over damped compared to the CFO III. The British CFO's also have one of
the sweetest clicks of all the click and pawl reels and their springs are easy to tune. Love the exposed rim as well, really comes in handy when fighting
larger fish. Good luck.

My problem my have been solved. A buddy of mine just picked up a reel at a local flea market. He said it has the serpentine handle and has the words Von Behr
etched on the back. I have never heard of that reel but it might be worth taking a look at. I searched it on line and all I can find is the new Abel reels.
I should be able to take a look at it on Tuesday night. If I get a chance I will post a couple of pictures. Mybe its that one in a million find.
Jason Just did another web search and found out who Friedrich von Behr was at least http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/trout_main.html interesting read if you have a spare half hour
