Purchased a rod from Marcello Calviello a few months ago and paid an import tax after receiving the rod and billed by Fed-ex.
Are there taxes when a used rod comes from Canada to the US? |

Others may chime in, but I don't think there should be. Fedex and UPS usually add it anyway (they act as their own customs brokers) on insured shipments.
Not a good deal for the consumer.

Import Tax... | #2 | ||
For those of you who wish to be enlightened by our government tax codes you may read below. For
those less inclined to read the garble-gook, the abridged version is 10% or $10 per rod excise tax charged to the "manufacturer, producer, or
importer."

The Federal Excise Tax (what eebarral is referring to) and US import tariffs (aka customs duties) are two independent things. According to the Harmonized
Tariff Schedule of the United States (2009) (Rev. 1) fishing rods (Heading 9507.10.00) imported into the US are subject to a 6% duty with some exceptions based
on trade agreements and/or where they are originating.
Full details can be found here: http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm The good stuff: Exception definitions: http://hotdocs.usitc.gov/...hts/bychapter/0901gn.pdf Fishing Rod specific info: http://hotdocs.usitc.gov/...ts/bychapter/0901C95.pdf Are there taxes when a used rod comes from Canada to the US? I believe Canada is one of the Special exemptions - CA

What about used equipment, hasn't tax been already paid on it?
Often I have been exhausted on trout streams, uncomfortable, wet, cold, briar scarred, sunburned,
mosquito bitten, but never, with a fly rod in my hand have I been in a place that was less than beautiful.

Silver Doctor;
In response to your question the answer is maybe. It all depends on the original manufacturer. If an item was manufactured in the US there is no duty or tariff owed if it is bought in Canada and brought back to the US. If it was manufactured outside the US tax and tariff may be owed. All international shipments are supposed to be accompanied by a detailed bill of lading (in triplicate) that states inumber and description of items, Harmonized import code and declared value as well as the country of original manufacture. My advice, if the item is worth it, plan a rreal nice fishing trip in Canada and then drive it across yourself. Any item with a value less than $1500 allows you to go through the regular border crossings. If you declare higher than that you must get into the very long line of Semis waiting to cross, and find a bona fide import agent, they aree usually located in trailers near the crossing, and they will not want to talk to you at all. Sooooo...... just make sure your declared value (on the sales slip) is under $1500 and you sail right through. Fed-Ex international ALWAYS acts as the import agent unless a specific import agent is identified. All fees required for import are then charged to the recipient, it is all right there on the little form you fill out when you use Fed Ex as an international shipper. |

What I found out is that from the around 100 items I send with TNT from around the world to the US worth between 50$ and 2500$ only 2 got a call to pay
import tax and paperwork from TNT. This 2 insisted to send there rods to there business address. After some fighting with TNT the could make clear that the
rods are for there private use and have nothing to do with there business and they don't had to pay for any paperwork or tax. From there on I send only to private addresses.
Thanks Olaf
