Why are so many obsessed with photos on the classified? On occasion I have put up very nice rods for sale at what I think are fair prices. The first thing I
receive is a request for photos. I do not own a camera other than the the ones you buy for 5.99. When I say sorry no photos that's it I never hear from
that person again. Lets be real what can you tell about a rod from a photo? A little bit about the finish/yes a little bit about the wraps/yes a little bit
about the hardware/yes. If I were buying a rod I would want to put the sections together/to see how straight it is/ how the ferrule fit is/ cast it to see how
the action/feel is etc. You cannot tell any of these from a picture. I think everybody that sells on the board is willing to take back a rod if the person is
not happy with it. I guess I just do not keep up with the modern world.

Hey Dave:
It's a wonder Marty Keane; Carmine Lisella; Bill McRoy; Jim Adams et al have been able to sell all those rods over all those years mostly without photos isn't it?! As an addendum to your post, it doesn't seem to matter if you do your best to post photos anyway. Someone will always ask for more photos; better "close-ups" etc. And then when you send them what they ask for, many times you don't even get a response. Oh well...I guess it's just part and parcel of our "instant gratification", electronic society. No place for us old guys anymore! Best, Scott

For me I guess its better than nothing. Since I can't put it together, cast, etc. A picture is the best I can do. I have been able to avoid some
problems on eb*y by looking at pics closely. (although I very seldom purchase rods or reels there anymore with the proliferation of fakes and frauds) If I
personally knew the individual it probably wouldn't matter or if I had bought something from them before (so far I have only bought one reel on the forum).
I have asked lots of questions of the dealers I have bought from but ask far less now after several excellent transactions. Dealing with people at long
distance via the internet is an adventure and I guess pictures at least help me feel a bit more comfortable. If you think it is a pain dealing with selling
tackle....try dating using the modern method ...Now that's and adventure.

Even with our generous return policy - sending a classic cane rod across the country via UPS or USPS is still not a fun experience. I worry the entire time a
rod is in transit - inbound or outbound. Good pictures are simply one more step in trying to avoid a transaction that ends up being nullified and causing the
rod to make a couple of unnecessary and dangerous journeys. Not to say that even with pictures - some rods don't pass a picky buyer's close inspection
- but they sure help. Us young guys wish you old farts would stop complaining and learn how to use a digital camera - you have figured out how to use your
computer.

When I am buying an item on line, I always like to see a picture. Especially if it is from a seller that I am not familiar with. I have been burned more than
one time because I did not get any pictures. Sure, if I am buying an item from some one that I have dealt with before and know and trust, no problem. The
fact is, If I am going to sell an item on line for $1000.00 or what ever amount, I can certainly take a few minuets to take a picture. Look at yabe, just
about any item that has lots of pictures sells at a good price vs. an item with only one picture or no pictures. That's because rarely does the buyer know
the seller. In this case, Dave, I would be happy to buy any tackle item from you based upon your description. Because I know and trust you. On the other
hand, if you were going to sell me a L800 80 qt. Hobart mixer with attachments, you had better send some pictures. ( or I could just drive my lazy ass over to
Mars Hill ).

OK before it goes any farther I made no mention of the auction site. No question a different set of rules apply. I am talking only about this site. Scott I
have figured it out. The guys that are asking for photos are the same ones I see in the grocery store on their cell phones asking their wife /or friend
"gee there are three kinds of spaghetti sauce which is the kind we like"?Or as Marty has implied ; looking for love in all the wrong places. Aaron as
you know I have no clue what the Hobart mixer is other than to make something good to eat. No matter I would treat the sale of the mixer to you as I would a
new rod or a used one. I will pay for the shipping to you and if you like it fine send me the money and if you do not like it also fine you pay to have it
shipped back. I have only been taken once and that was by a board member. Just remember some day y'all will be old farts.

Uintaangler!! I've seen your picture and whether you know it or not--you are an ole fart, my friend!!
Dave, you and I are definitely in the "OF" class; which I wear with a badge of honor! You know I would buy from you sight unseen, but lets face it, if I didn't know you, I wouldn't. It's simply a matter of marketing in todays e-world. Every time I try to sell something without pics, it fails miserably. Take a few glitzey pics, and, BINGO, top $ for quality stuff. The Corsetti's, Lisella's, McCroy's, et al, could, I imagine, broaden their audience and prices (in better times) if they had cool 4 color catalogues. But, that is really expensive in the print world. They live by reputation and word of mouth, as do we all to some degree. Or, like some other dealers, they could go all Internet w/ the glitz and all. They have chosen to stick with the traditional method of marketing and good for them. But, if I was going to try to be a dealer and just starting out, there is no way I'd try it with the traditional method! (and, yes Dave, I know damn well you are not trying to be a dealer). You're just a damn fine rod builder who, every once in a while, finds a great rod that needs a restoration and then a new home. Thank goodness for folks like you who have the skill and knowledge. I'l now quit my rambling and end by saying if oneculm ever wants me to come up to his place and shoot some pics and post them for him, it would be an honor to do so. If he prefers I not do that, then I say, "GO BUY A CAMERA, YOU OLE FART! With all due respect, Tom |

Well I certainly dont understand why its so hard to figure out why people like pictures.............its so very simple.....to see what the rod looks
like.........yes...thats right.......what does the rod look like.....I am not the expert on cane rods as some of you here are and quite often am not familiar
with what a particular rod model may look like......what the hardware and handle and all the rest look like.....does that make sense!!

Re-read oneculm's initial post, please.
I don't know why it's so hard to figure out that everyone in the universe doesn't automatically own a digital camera. And that's just one reason why. Flyman

It is so utterly amazing how life before digital cameras and cell phones could have any depth or richness at all? Don't know how we even carried out day to
day needs...

REAL men use film...preferably Tri-X or Plus-X, developed in Microdol-X and printed on Ilford, Seagul or Kodak paper..in their own home-made darkroom.

I think the old adage, "A picture tells a thousand words" applies here. If I really knew the seller well, I might take it sight and photo unseen but other than that I think it's a better idea to at least see a photo of the rod. |

Let me get this straight-- nowadays not owning a digital camera and not automatically providing rod photos on this Forum is akin to wearing a soft helmet and
goggles in an open cockpit bi-plane?!
So what's your point again? Regards, Flyman

This board is choking with photos of guys proud to show their equipment and drool over reels and rods..............why would it be different when it comes time
to purchase or sell...? If oneculm dosent have a camera he wants to use no problam dont show photos.............but if people dont follow through with a
purchase it may be telling him somthing....!
oneculm. > "The guys that are asking for photos are the same ones I see in the grocery store on their cell phones asking their wife /or friend "gee there are three kinds of spaghetti sauce which is the kind we like"?"<.............I get the funny feeling you think guys who ask for photos are potential flakes........
Flyman......>"Re-read oneculm's initial post, please"<............. Yes please do.................oneculm does have a camera...............
