Short Line Rods - Beasley Perfectionist |
Lead | ||
|
Most of the fishing that I do is on small streams (less than 20 feet wide) casting upstream. I 'll usually strip line in after a cast until I have about
5-7' of line off of the tip and then cast back out 15 - 25'. I have been looking for a rod that loads well in this range but not at all wimpy.
Yesterday I was lucky enough to cast a Beasley Perfectionist. Wonderful rod. It has a very light tip that casts a very short line with ease and feel. It
delivers a very delicate line at 15' - 25' and yet it seems to have an endless supply of horsepower for longer casts. Amazing.

I have cast one of jim's perfectionists and it is a very sweet rod. My personal fave is the Granger 7030 but my short line perspective is a bit skewed as
I use a silk tapered leader that is almost like a smooth extension of the fly line. So 3-5 feet of fly line casts more like 9-11 feet. For want of a better
word the granger is crisp in the short line situations and helps me shoot line back under the laurels. One thing I'm not a fan of in my small mountain
streams is the super short 5-6.5 foot rods some guys love. I end up roll casting a lot and prefer a 7 or 7.5 footer.

I fish my Beasley Perfectionist often during the summer on the headwaters of some of my favorite creeks.
Delicate presentations with ease. Roll casts well and has plenty of humph to stretch out a cast when needed. Beautiful flamed finish with Jim's understated black wraps and hardware. The ferrules have a very deep bronze finish which is quite appealing. Also like my Folsom/Heddon 7' Featherweight. A great 4 weight short line rod. My Dave Male 7 1/2' 2 piece for a 5 weight is also a pleasure to fish with a short line, or any line. Bob Go Heels!!! |

Sounds like my cricks. I have two rods that excel at this type fishing. My Thramer 6611 taper (6.5 ft. 3/4 wt.) can cast with just the leader and has a
surprising amount of umph for a longer cast if needed. My Phillipson 7 footer is a better all around small stream rod and I use a 5wf for short cast. The
Thramer rod is better on the real small streams (10-15 ft. wide) and for dries only, but the Phillipson is best if a dropper may be needed or in wind so it
gets used a lot. Both are very light in hand. I like the Perfectionist tapers a lot (there are so many), but think of them as more of an all around trout rod
than a small stream specialist, but that's obviously just my opinion. I've never cast Beasley's version but have only heard good things. I own a
version of Martha's Perfectionist that a couple makers make (AJ made mine for Left Coast Tackle.... what a bargain!) and it is one fine casting rod. It
could easily be used for real small streams and 8 inch trout, but the other rods I metioned are a little more enjoyable to me on those waters. I like rods in
the 6 ft. to 7 ft. range for this type of fishing, but am interested in getting a long, light rod one day like a 7'9" 2/3 wt . Tight lines.

I have several rods that are great on small water, small fish. First is the Leonard 3734 AMC It's a 7' 3/4wt which is a 3/2 built by Mike brooks. It is
great at roll casting
a lot of line and has the light tips you would expect. I also have a F.E. Thomas 6'-8" Fairy made by AJ which is one of the nicest rods I've ever owned. It's the perfect 3 wt fly rod and comes to life with silk. The other fun rod is the Lancaster Savage River, 7'-2" 2/1 evolved from the Driggs taper, not a copy but a sweet parabolic that's a blast to use. Alan |

Above, a new favorite rod, hand-planed by a pal who's laying in a hospital bed right now. He may not see where I've taken the rod, nor the fish
I've caught with it. He may not hear how happy I am to fish his creation. It's George's Los Padres rod, his only 3/2 (named for some coastal
mountains north of Los Angeles, courtesy of Mr. San Andreas, it's his fault. Sorry.) It's a beaut for smallstream work -- 7', 3/2 for a DT3. True
medium, stiffening up above the grip. Pinpoint, easy casting. Beautifully done. Hand-made ferrules of duronze. Flamed medium dark. Perfect.
A nice female, taken on the Los Padres, in the Los Padres. The coastal stream was giving up tons of March Browns that day. The trout were looking up. The
one took a parachute ant pattern. And we put her in the box for a photo. It's a great idea my pal David got. Fish stop struggling immediately.
Another local stream, another fine rainbow. This guy was taken on a 7' Thomas, DT3. I fish 6 1/2' to 7 1/2' depending on the water and the
vegetation. There's nothing like a flexible rod in right quarters, and hitting spots and getting risers. Short bamboo rules.

The Reverend also makes a 6'6" 3pc that is just about perfect for small streams. Quick, light, pinpoint accuracy at mountain distances. Wouldn't
leave home without it. I think it is a Payne taper but I'll have to ask him.

I would also recommend Jim's Perfectionist, which I have cast. Also consider a PHY Driggs with the taper modified for a 4wt.
Best of luck, Secondhandwolf |

My 6'3" Beasley Midge gets a lot of side armed dry fly work in those type of streams.
I'm recently finding out that it's not just a small stream rod. It has a good bit of oomph with a 4wt line. |
