Posts: 46 05/31/2009 08:07	Tags : None What does the "D" mean at the end of a Dickerson rod designation? Is that a reference to line weight or is that a reference to location like Detroit For example, Pete from Vermont's Dickerson is labeled 801510 D I assume this means its an 8 ft rod with 2 ferrules one size 15 & another size 10 and does the D mean its a D line or made in Detroit? 8013 means 8 ft size 13 ferrule 8014 means 8 ft size 14 ferrule The "-D" confuses me because I have also seen "-RB" and "-Leitz" and those don't seem to correspond to line weights.

Posts: 215 05/31/2009 08:27	The answer is on Page 92 of Stein & Schaaf's book "Dickerson - The Man and his Rods". D is Detroit. Leitz is for Earl Leitz and R.B. is for Ray Bergman. These designation do not indicate anything special or unusual about the tapers. Chris

Posts: 200 05/31/2009 10:08	Yes, the "D" might stand for Detroit, but then on some of his other rods what does the "C" and "E" stand for? In the Stein/Schaaf book, I think there's a list of Dickerson tapers with some of the taper numbers followed by initials like C, D, and E. I have seen, for example, a 9 ft. Dickerson marked "901812 C". Didn't Dickerson also fully spell out "Detroit" on some of his rods -- in which case the single letter D might refer to the line diameter just as the C and E apparently did? I once weighed and mic'd two Dickersons: one marked 861711 and the other marked 861711 D. The 861711 D was definitely the lighter of the two. The two tapers also differed in that the 861711 had a larger butt and smaller diameter tips. In casting them, the 861711D was closer to a 5-weight while he 861711 was closer to a 6-weight. Would be interesting to do a comparison of a number of 861711 rods to see if that difference is consistent with others marked with and without a D.

Posts: 65 05/31/2009 10:42	Letters were used for line wts. before numbers were used. "D" was a 6 wt., a "C" was a 7 wt., "E" was a 5 wt. I have a 801510-D and it's perfect with a DT-5 or a WF-6, actually better with the DT-5. If you look at any of Dickerson's Catalogs, you'll see the line wt. designation as a letter. I think down-weighting lines for his rods one level works best with modern lines. Hence a "D" works best with a DT-5.
