OK, I've struggled with this little dilemma for awhile now, and I've asked a number of people which way to go. The consensus is that there is no
consensus. Here's the deal: I have a Bristol Era Gene Edwards rod - 8 1/2 ft "Fly Queen" trade rod made for Newman-Sterns of Cleveland. The
rod is complete with full tips, but sorely in need of a restoration. I've got everything stripped, and I'm ready to wrap and dip, but I don't know
whether to add a couple more guides to the rod. It has the bare minimum, and most rods this length have a couple more guides. The cane cleaned up pretty
nicely, and there aren't any severe marks where the original guides were wrapped (maybe if you looked real close, you could spot a couple). Most everyone
agrees that it could use additional guides, but most everyone agrees that it will also alter the originality of the rod. I know this isn't a
super-collectible rod, but it is quite old and it is from the Edwards family. I guess it's stuck in "no-man's land" as far as it's
vintage character.
So, please take a second and help me out - I'd like to hear your opinion.
Thanks,
Dean D
