If you could provide the dimensions of the taper you are making, I could set up a form and see if it will cut to those dimensions.

If I'm not mistaken, Joe was saying that the forms have a slope of .001"/inch and are about .110" fully closed at the start of the swell, then
add .025" over the next 2" and continue the .001"/inch slope. For a 7' rod, these would be the minimum (closed) station measurements:
84" - .143" 80" - .138" 72" - .135" 70" - .110" (swell starts) 65" - .105" 60" - .100" ... 40" - .075" I've cut quick T&T style swells in 2 and 3wt rods with my Wagner swelled butt forms which are made almost identically to the Bellinger forms (the Wagner has a .040" over 2" instead of the .025" over 2", otherwise they are exactly the same as far as the groove goes).

I noticed on the Wagner site it indicates "a swell of about .120 over 2" on their forms, does that coincides with your Wagner forms?

The taper that is cut into the Wagner forms goes from .110" to .150" over one inch (closed). What Jeff was saying on his site is that the swell cut
in the example photo was cut at .120" over 2":
This is a picture of the first blank I planed up with this new tool, featuring a swell of about .120 over 2"...and you can make them even bigger, if you desire! More extreme swells can definitely be cut, and if you want the swell to be shorter, simply adjust where the front of the grip goes.

BLAUVELT FORMS | #26 | ||
|
I bought Blauvelt's form along with his power hand planer and measuring devices years ago.I had some initial issues with the form and he quickly
replaced it,no questions asked. All else worked as anticipated. It was a decent start on a lower budget. I think you will generally get what you pay for.

That said, I'm going to have Forrest Maxwell make me a new swelled butt form come this fall. I hear you can pay much more for a new form...but they won't be any more accurate than Maxwell's. |
