I just received my first ever second hand rod, and I'm a little disappointed. I need to know if it's
justified.
This Heddon #20 8-1/2' 2-1/2F 3/2 rod was bought online. There were several nice pictures and a wonderful description of how nice it was. And it is, to
an extent. But, there was no mention of any flaws in the itrem description. I
feel I was duped.
The sections are all perfectly straight. Ferrules are tight, and secure. Guides, grip and seat are original and in excellent shape. There is one wrap that
was redone without any attempt to match the originals, but I can fix that. Sleeve is original and in excellent shape, with identifying tag still readable and
in place. Original tube is undented, complete, but with some splits to the bottom piece and the screw top. The Heddon
inscription is the slanted type (will this date the rod?) written across three
flats. Ring hookkeeper is secure. All in all, a really well kept rod unused for
a long time.
And that's the trouble. There are several areas, a particularly long one on the mid section, and on each ferrule male and female where the varnish melted and took on the texture of the rod bag. See the image below.
I paid what I would consider top dollar (~ $300), but I don't really know since I'm not a collector, and certainly not educated in the value of the rod. How did I do?
I bought the rod to use, not to hang on the wall. Should I keep it and
refinish it? What is the value as is, compared to a cleanup and redip? What
would you do?
Any idea what a professional would charge to refinish this?
Dave
