South African Trout Fishing |

Have any of you had any experience in fishing for trout in South Africa? I will be flying into Jo-Burg on a regular basis with a 48 hour layover. Is the
prospect of fishing realistic? I have to be able to do this without traveling too far from town.....I need enough sleep to stay awake and fly back to the
states.

Thanks...I will. I posted a request for some info on a South African Fly Fishing message board....immediately got invitations to fish. The generosity of
fellow fly guys always amazes me.

Hey Bud
I own a fly-shop in Johannesburg and would be very happy to point you in the right direction. A lot will depend on the time of year. Our cooler months - April though to September - is out trout time, but you'd have to drive about 2-3 hours from Jo'burg for some decent trout fishing. During the hot summer months, we tend to concentrate on fishing for an indigenous fish called the yellowfish which looks a lot like a streamlined carp. We catch them in a river called the Vaal, which has around 600 miles of fishable water, or one of its many smaller tribs. The water in this river system is warm and off-coloured (Vaal means discoloured in the Afrikaans language), but that doesn't put the fish off at all. It's a big river, spanning a couple of hundred yards at some points and we wade fish it (carefully!!). The river is an hour or so's drive from the city so is perfect for a days fishing. We fish for the yellows using small nymphs under indicators which we cast upstream or accross, and in the evenings when the caddis hatch, one can have great sport with dries and emergers. The fish get big too - it is not uncommon to land fish in the 5-10lb class - with the average going around 3lbs. They are very strong fish and foreign clients we have guided over the years have been amazed at the fight a good-sized yellow can put up. I'll PM you my contact details and it would be great to have you come by our shop. Oh, and the coffee's pretty good too! Tom |

Thanks Tom....You can count on seeing me at the shop.....A fly shop (with free Coffee) is like a gift from heaven on a layover (especially an international
layover). I have had some great fishing trips on layovers in my 20 years with Delta....hope this works out as well as some of the rest of them...
Bud P.S. Email me your preferences in Adult beverages......coffee sometimes needs a little seasoning. |

All I remember was the first day wading I thought they were bonefish for about 5 minutes, think the heart rate got to about 350. If I ever get back it will be through SA. Remember one guy, Arno, and another I think Andy, family was big in wine industry back home, really great guys to fish with.
