Getting a Handle on my Bamboo Fly Rod Collecting |
Lead | ||
|
Recently I came to the realization that I needed to get a handle on my bamboo fly rod collecting. Within every list and catalogue I looked, there were rods
that I felt must be purchased or I might never get a chance again! Then, I looked at the "Got a New Rod Lately" topic on this board and saw dozens of
gorgeous rods, many by makers out there I have never heard of, and I wished I had one! And, of course there are the rods that come up for sale by Old Masters
like Dickerson, Payne, Edwards, Thomas... There are makers who are working out there right now producing fantastic rods from Abrams, Brandin and Carpenter to
Taylor, Wagner and Zeitak with many makers in between. Production rods like Granger, Philipson, Heddon, Orvis, Thomas & Thomas, Winston and Sweetgrass, are
very impressive and, not to forget, there are the guys at the height of their game taken from us too soon, for me, George Maurer comes to mind. How does one
decide which rods to buy? How can there be some order to all of this? I found myself searching through lists of rod collections that others had posted. Did I
see a pattern? Some I did but many I did not. A few collect specific makers or just quads but many, too many, seem as lost as me, buying rods like me, nice
rods but rods with no specific relationship to the other rods in my "collection". Well, they are all hand made split bamboo rods which are gorgeous
to look at and wonderful to fish. Now, there are those whose collections did show some order and studying them has shown me a way. Did I want to collect one
maker, like Paul Young or, one design, Quadrates for example, perhaps rods by Colorado makers? There are many choices and I could make up my own category, like
all blonde or all dark flamed, or all three-piece 7 ½ for 5 wt rods! I could do whatever I liked or continue doing nothing at all, buying rods that interested
me and that I can afford (ahem) at the time. And, if I were to come to some conclusion would I need to sell all those rods which do not fit? Well, I can answer
that right now. No! But, I did decide to move in some organized direction if only to get a grip on things before they spun out of control. The first nice
bamboo rod I owned, purchased as a gift for me by my wife, was a Thomas and Thomas Classic 7 ½' for 5 wt. (Serial # 40XX, Dorsey and Taylor). Now that was
a gorgeous rod. Not only that but when I looked at the T&T catalogues back then (Mid to late 80's) the Individualist Series were Magnificent, the Sans
Pariel, well they were certainly "Without Equal" in my book, except perhaps their Limited Edition rods! I spent many hours going over T&T
catalogues just spellbound by all those fantastic bamboo fly rods. My only other T&T is a Sans Pariel also a 7 1/2' for 5 wt (serial # 33XX, Dorsey and
Maxwell). Yes, thinking back, I became interested in collecting bamboo rods, after given that T&T classic, because of all those gorgeous rods in the
T&T catalogues. Thomas and Thomas bamboo rods are great rods, very collectable and, like many a man before me, I have a thing for a swelled butt! After
many days of consideration, the basics of my rod collecting are beginning to materialize. Thomas and Thomas rods will become the core of my collection. Of
course, the George Maurer rods I have will always be special and the few rods by the old Masters are going nowhere. If that Dickerson or Payne comes along and
I can afford it :^) I will not hesitate to buy. In addition I will likely choose one active rodmaker, whose rods I admire, someone I can call up and talk to on
occasion, talk about bamboo fly rods and fly fishing and whatever, like I did with George Maurer. Being able to get that person on the line will, to some
extent, narrow the field. Jim Phillips

Jim,
Thanks for this thoughtful post on how you arrived at collecting T&T. I've always wondered how/why others derived their interest in a certain rodbuilder, so it was nice to read your genealogy of how you went from your first T&T to collecting them. I wonder how many others collect rods like the first one they owned? -- Dr. Todd |

Jim: Just read your post....you already have focussed your collecting....you are collecting sheer enjoyment...you love these rods and who the heck cares, as
long as you enjoy them....just tell the family to line your casket with them and keep harvesting.
As for me, I find that most of my collection is comprised of Lost Souls...seems like most of the rods I own have some issue, be it a mid 3/4 inches short or a mis-matched wrap or an "invisible" wrap that isn't so invisible. ...and that's because I'm cheap and always looking for a deal as I carry on my weekly Easter Egg hunt....certainly NOT the way to collect...but I guess, in my own sick way, I'm having great fun with it all:eek

Does anyone know when Tom Moran was at T&T?
Wow, Dorsey, Maxwell, Taylor and Moran. Now, that is a real lineup of talent! Jim |

This topic has given me pause to reflect on how I came to be in this state:
I think I can divide it into various manic periods when obsession overruled logic and chaos reigned. 1. The Heddon Epiphany. 2, The Granger Obsession 3. The Phillipson Reformation 4. The Phillipson Refinement 5. The Leonard Serendipity 6. The Payne Revelation 6a. The Edwards Affair 7. The Howells Flirtation 8. The Boy of Summers 9. The Orvis Diversion 10. The Great Purge 11. The Eclectic Years 12. The Heddon Revival 13. The Parabolic Period 14. The Second Great Purge 15. The Phillipson Rediscovery 16. The Wagner Excesses 17. The T&T Debauchery There, I feel better now. I have realized that each one of these periods was accompanied by an "Eureka! I've found it!" moment, only to be followed by an equally or more important eureka. I conclude there is no destination here, but a journey. |

This is great Ted. Due to my own self-diagnosis, I have determined that I am in the early stages of this psychosis. I have so many more wonderful stages to go
through. Just what happens with one of these purges? I hope it isn't the type of purge that the medical people in hospitals are noted for giving. You have
used some colorful language as well. I have to remember that I live in New England, the home of the Puritans. I don't think we are supposed to go around
and do much "debauchery." Is there a toned down version that I could practice?

Just what happens with one of these purges?
I was thinking more along the lines of political purge than medical. Although it might be considered a form of painful elimination. As an alternative to Debauchery, you might try Binge? |

Collecting bamboo rods is a bit like being a drug addict. Being that we are mere mortal men with imperfect tendencies many of us simply can't resist. Like
a drug addict we have to have more, and more, and more. Maybe you're sitting around one night looking over your "secret" savings account for
emergencies thinking about dropping two grand on a lovely new rod. Then you receive it. Then the new owner luster maybe wears off a bit. Then you see another
one, and another one. And you find yourself rationalizing why you have to have all these rods. Meanwhile your savings account is dwindling. And you find
yourself putting off more important things around the house that need to be done. And yourself? You can eat for alot cheaper right? Your truck doesn't need
tires right away. Oh, and you have to have reels to match every rod, right?
Face it folks, we're imperfect men |

Bamboo Rod Limits | #12 | ||
|
Latest resolve:
1. American-made, but not 2. W. or s. of PA. 3. No longer than 8', no shorter than 6'. 4. A 2/2 or 3/2, of even section length. 5. No evident structural repairs, wraps, etc. (Refinish & new cork OK.) 6. Line no heavier than 5, no lighter than 2. 7. No 5wt for rods shorter than 7'6". 8. Cap and ring for rods shorter than 7'6". SL or C&R OK for that length or longer. 9. At least 25 years old. All but one of my rods meet these standards. The exception fails on age. This excludes a lot of nice rods, but one has to have some limits. Susceptible to corruption for right rod, though. |

your lucky trust me on this , don't ever get into collecting classic reels at the same time as collecting bamboo rods , you'll never sleep and talk about being broke , i was into reels along time befor this bamboo bug got me , worse thing i ever did was have 2 guys from utah show up for fishing and they brought some of the nicest bamboo rods i ever seen ,about 15 rods, next thing i know i was hooked bad for wanting them better rods , i aways caught fish on my heddons and grangers , they were good enough for me till then , after seeing the workmanship in some of them rods , i decided i was going to get myself some to use and let others who come fishing with me try them out , i'v been poor ever since , yet i don't regret it at all , if the right rod came along today for me , i'd still could not hold off on pulling the trigger , it is a sickness , sorta like having to buy a new toy to get a fix , even if we only fish the rod once a year , crazy , and to think i used to tease my wife about her shopping , gentleman i'm sad to say them woman have nothing on us crazy fish bums , i know a guy who sneeks his rods into the house so his honey never knows how many he has , now thats bad , and softstick , your right , i need a couple new tires

I love this thread! It is like a collectors anonymous meeting and we all need each other. But, with Richards line, not much else needs to be said (although
I am sure much more will)!
" should i be selling this week or buying , if it's buying , what have you got to sell me" ps - I have almost all of my collectible stuff shipped to my office, isn't that normal? |

I've said this before and I'll say it again, the only thing that matters in this business is that you have fun. There are plenty of guys who have
more rods than fish that they've caught. It doesn't matter as long as that's what they enjoy doing. One pitfall that makes some collectors lose
interest is when they start buying pieces not because they love them but because they have collector value.
As for me, I like to buy rods from different builders. If they are old masters it gives me an opportunity to research that builder and try to figure out when and where the rod was made and where it fit in his lineup. If the builder is current, I like to buy rods made by builders I have met. |

And now that I have posted this message I see the gods are testing me. Right here on our own Classified list there is a Mark Aroner Hunt model for sale, and,
on another site a Dana Gray plus a 7 1/2' Payne. then there is a great looking....
Buck up Jim! Hold yer ground. Quit looking at those lists. Eyes to the Front! No, its not going to be easy but it IS fun and I may still go broke buying wonderful Bamboo Rods! And, yes of course my rods are shipped to my office. best, JimP |

JimP,
you left Aroner off your list of T&T talent. You should probably buy the Hunt Pattern to make up for your oversight. |
