Reels You Regret Selling? |
Lead | ||
|
How many of you have sold a reel which you later regretted? The reason I ask is that I buy plenty of tackle, and sell very little. Only once have I bought, and
later sold, a reel which I wish I had kept - a St. George Jr. repro LHW (the buyer from me got a great deal, you know who you are!). Last night I was able to
buy another, at a very fair (given current market prices, albeit more than I sold mine for) price.

I wouldn't say regretted.....but certainly second guessed the decision more than once after I sold my circa 1913 St G and my 3
inch Dingley Red Agate Perfect.....they both went to good homes though and financed two reels that will never leave my collection so all is well
Something to consider: Be willing to share photos, information and the knowledge you have about your collection with anyone that has an interest in learning...........also share your knowledge to answer questions that others may have about items in their collections.........doing this will make you feel good and benefits this community ..................after all, what good is having knowledge that isn't shared. Sage 509 and 507 that I sold for $150 for the pair in 1988. Stupid move, even considering I got them on a pro deal for next to nothing. Great reels I should
have hung onto, esp. the 507 they are hard to find. I have been keeping my eye open for a 507 for a couple years with no luck.

Almost two decades ago, I traded a 3-inch, 3-screw Hardy St. George for a valuable, original painting. The painting was worth it but I now wish I had paid cash
instead of trading the reel. Still, I own enough St. George reels (having starting looking for them in the 1980's) that I can't complain. At about the
same time I bought a highest-grade, raised-pillar Julius Vom Hofe fly reel that was perfect except that a prior owner had crudely scrawl-carved his initials
deeply into a hard rubber side plate. Perhaps I should have looked into options for repair or replacement, but eventually the vandalism bothered me so much
that I sold it after a year or two, and that's too bad because you wouldn't believe how nicely it fished). The Sage 509 is certainly a very fine reel,
as are the smaller reels in that Hardy-built series.

EVH Perfection #2, about mint condition. In the earlier days of this board, it sat unmolested in the classifieds for quite a long time. Finally sold it at a
show.
I would have never fished it, which is why I moved it on. But I miss it once in a while.......... |

We should do another thread on "regret not buying".Quashnet's thought on all the ST.George's I could have bought in the 1980's for a lot
less than today's market price makes me sick to my stomach!!! I have been keeping my eye open for a 3-screw 3" from the 1930's for about a year
now without finding what I want and it's probably going to be a while more before I find one.

I know this photo is cruel. Sorry. In the 1980's I really liked the Hardy-built Sage reels. I got the Sage 509 in order to start Atlantic salmon fishing,
and I would have bought some of the smaller Sage trout models too, except that I realized that I could find a 3-screw Hardy St. George at a tackle auction or
from a dealer for about the same price that you'd pay for the equivalent, new Sage reel. "This situation is not going to last very long," I
thought to myself, and started buying St. Georges. The one I traded for the painting had a better finish than any of these. What was I thinking that day?
Don't begin a conversation about "regret not buying," unless you want me to start whining about a nice Hardy Barton.

i always remember that picture of yours with them st george's ,nice worn looking reels , 3 screw reels with the double row of holes , you don't see them often anymore , i was lucky enough to find one to add to my collection this winter and i think in the st georges they are the best for looks , are your's all 3 3/8 in size and do they all have the built up drums , mine has a built up drum , i have some old 3 screw st georges in 3 inch , they have the double row of holes also , again a much nicer looking reel i think with that second set of holes

About some 15 odd years ago, I temporarily lost my mind and traded off this reel for something I thought I needed more! It was a deal that I very much regretted making! This past spring I found something to trade again..... and my little 3" baby Dingley (canada stamped) has returned! ![]() ![]()
Ahhhhh .......... Life is GOOD!

These are the 3-3/8" reels, Richard, plus there's a fifth one not in this photo. Some have the small arbor, some have the expanded drum. But this
thread is supposed to be about regrets, not satisfaction.

Just yesterday I sold a really nice two-screw Princess that is in magnificent shape and is a reel I dearly love.
However, a new rod just got finished and funds needed to be raised, and with my current collection of rods, the Princess was sitting on the bench at the moment and was expendable. I love the sound of a screaming Princess above all others, and I love the way the reel works equally well on 5wt and 6wt rods. A truly versatile piece that I will miss.

Nothing strange about the 1928-34 Shakespeare Russells, and their variants (Heddon Little Rivers below). They are amazingly good reels, with our without agates
and line guards.
I certainly wish I had the one you sold, Mark. I would regret selling some of the reels I own now, but every reel I have sold along the way has been for a good cause.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

Mystery reel. Wadham? So-called "character reel"? It was pretty small, maybe 2.5 inches. 2-3wt with the dished spool. "Large" arbor.
I sold it and then wished I had it back. I thought I had tracked down the owner, but the guy on the other end of the phone was extremely elusive and
unhelpful, claimed he did not have the reel. It was odd, since I was offering a significant amount of money to obtain it once more. Oh well. I couldn't
find my other picture, showing the reverse. And I never took pictures of the internals. The drag was adjustable and consisted of a threaded knob on the
reverse that went through the plate and applied pressure to the outside of the spool. The friction was provided by a small piece of leather or something
similar that was inserted into the end of the knob. A bit heavy, even with the porting. That brass foot was a solid block. Anyone have any ideas?
