PHY Perfectionist Question |
Lead | ||
|
I have read several times on the forum, Paul H. Young's own description of his Driggs taper. I guess this was a description he used in his advertisements.
Does anyone know how he described his Perfectionist taper?
Thanks, John |

Thanks, Banjo. I've been curious about that myself. The description for the Perfectionist says 2 1/2 oz. I wonder if they were really that light?

That's amazing in that it's lighter than graphite rods of that length. I've seen that photo before, but what's astounding is that both rods
look to be in perfection condition. Just think that Perfectionist was made over 54 years ago. Do you still fish with it?

Banjo, I also noticed that your Martha Young Perfectionist is labeled "H.E.H Silk". If I'm not mistaken, H.E.H converts to a 5-wt in the AFTMA
system. Interesting, because I know some people consider the Perfectionist to be a 4-wt while others use it as a 5-wt.

The Martha Marie was a definite 5 wt and I no longer own it, the Perfectionist (Martha Marie Young's) is a 4 wt and I do fish it.............

...some people consider the Perfectionist to be a 4-wt while others use it as a 5-wt.
Some may be fours; others, fives. As with most (all?) of Paul Young's rod models, there were versions and variations. Often a model was made first in a lighter-weight version, and then later the rod model got heavier. I believe that there were at least two different versions of the PHY Perfectionist, one with a butt measurement of 0.260" and a heavier version at 0.275". This difference may be referenced in Bob Summers' Model 260 and Model 275 rods. The circa 1955 PHY catalog has a shorter and different descriptive text for the Perfectionist. In part it reads: "This is the most delightful and efficient rod in its weight class we have ever made. It is an all around dry and nymph rod and casts beautifully at from 15' to 60'. It hits its peak efficiency with the tiny late season flies and very fine leaders, in trained hands, it will execute curve casts of any size needed."
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
460 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

I also own Dody Ford's Midge, if you read the section in the catalog you'll see the Midge is supposed to use an HEH line as well but note the Midge
weighs .24 ozs more than the Perfectionist and is 1'3" shorter and is marked for HHH lines in Paul's hand.

quashnet wrote:Thanks, quashnet. Others have also noted that this is the reason for some of the differences seen in the tapers posted for PHY rods in the various databases. Regardless, Mr. Young designed and built some outstanding fly rods and anyone who owns one has a special part of bamboo history. |

Thanks guys. My first Perfectionist was a 7/1/2' for 5 wt and so marked on the rod, purchased from Hoagy Carmichael jr. I loved how that rod cast.
Unfortunately, I no longer own it. Every Perfectionist I have seen or owned since has been for a 4 wt and seemed a little more "delicate", not as
nice a caster(for me). In a conversation recently John Pickard told me that there were two distinctive Perfectionist tapers, one designed for a 4 wt and the
other for a 5 wt. (and probably some variations of each).

The Summers 275 is pretty much the original taper of PHY's?
