Line for 4/5 WT Rod |
Lead | ||
|
I have a Jenkins 7'9" rod which is rated for a 4 or 5 Wt. Does anyone have a suggestion for a modern line that weighs somewhere between a 4 wt and a
5 wt? I'm thinking I probably want a "light 5 wt" since I will be casting mostly short to medium distances. What fills that niche? Thanks.

The Rio Grande lines are marketed as being a half-weight heavy, so a labelled 4 is supposed to be a 4-1/2. I've bought one of them and found that to be
true.
The old Wulff Triangle tapers were originally sold as, say, 4/5 weight, appropriate for both. IIRC, they now just call the same line a 4wt. Those are the 2 that come to mind. Lee PS Have you just tried a regular 4 and 5 on it to see if one feels right for you? It's all somewhat subjective anyway.... |

You might try a Cortland Sylk... many members here consider their lines a 1/2 wt lighter than rated (e. g. their 5 wt. is closer to a 4 1/2 wt.) at least in
performance. I personally have never weighed the first 30' but they do seem to load the rod somewhat less than many other lines. I do like the presentation
the Sylk provides.

The old A/B rating on the Wulff TT was A is rating for first 30 feet, B is rating for the full head length. To the OP, I personally wouldn't try to find a
"half weight" line. Try a DT in both a 4 and a 5, see which one feels better at the distance you will be fishing the rod, start with a 5. Then pull
off the maximum amount you think you may want to cast with the rod, say 50 feet, lay it out in front of you, then lift it into a backcast. You are looking to
see if the rod feels overloaded with that amount of line.
Or you could contact Jenkins (contact info is around this site somewhere) and ask their recommendation.

slowcast wrote:Don't you mean the opposite? If you are fishing a short line you would need a 5 to load the rod properly. Do try a Quiet Taper II DT 5wt. I have just come back from a trip where I was fishing #14 dries with a 4wt DT Sylk during the evening. The next morning I switched to a QT II DT 4wt with the same rod. Big improvement!! It of course depends on the rod and your casting style but I have never been disappointed with the QT lines and cane.

I agree completely with Oldfishbrain. If you are going to be casting short & medium distances, you want a heavier line to load your rod adequately.

Scientific Anglers GPX lines are also about 1/2 a line weight heavier than their rating. So a 4wt in that would probably do the trick.

I fish mostly Terenzio lines. He makes half weights as well as full. He will make you a 4 1/2 DT that will curl your toes. His even come with loops
woven into the ends like some of the old Kingfisher's. Top notch lines that cast like a dream. Phoenix is also a superb line but I don't think they
make half weights. I think the herndon's are his only us distributer.

I haven't cast that particular rod, but every 4/5 wt. rod I've cast has always felt better with a 5 in my hands. I fish smaller streams so the extra
weight helps with short cast. I have cast the 70L which is Steve's 3/4 and I liked it with a 4. I also fish a Wagner 4/5 and like it best with a 5.
Purely subjective, I know, but if I see a rod with 2 line designations I always go for the heaviest.

Concur with the opinions to go with the 5 IF you're going to be fishing within 30' or so. If your casts are farther than that consistantly, try the
Sylk DT5 or the TT4, both of which are, IMO, as has been stated, a 4 1/2wt.

I disagree with eveything these boneheads have said.
I do this to start a discussion about who knows anything about anything ...after the discussion heats up I simply say, "your full of Monkey Poop so let's go the the river and see who's right. Next thing you know were fishing side by side, laughing and carrying on like we were only in our teens, after we have thoroughly exhausted ourselves on the river, caught a couple and probably lost more...off to the stream side tavern and have a couple of cold ones. So let's go fishing and find out who is right ..4 or 5 or is it 5 or 4....bartender! Actually there is some very good information here....I'm just un-winding from another day with Lawyers....if there is any justice in this world the species would cease to exist. Monty Montana

i struggled with an older rod to find the right line. didn't know the reccommended line weight but a 4 seemed too light and a 5 too heavy. i found the
right match in a rio gold 4 wt. which i'm told is a heavier line. worked for me anyway.

Not rocket science and you don't need to go looking for 1/2 wt lines. Try a 4wt and then try a 5wt. Which ever feels right to you is the line to go with.
Rod makers don't make rods in 1/2 wt increments - anglers make rods into 1/2 wt increment rods.

Thank you for all the suggestions. There's a lot of good advice here, especially the comments about not trying to go crazy with line weights between 4 and
5. I'm afraid I am guilty as charged on that one. I have to constantly remind myself to keep this wonderful pastime "simple."
