Rod? Fly? Who am I to bicker? Take your druthers.
I'm proud. Hunters may have cornered venery. But
bamboo fly rod fishers clearly have the edge on ribaldry.

Although I have an aluminum 12' SPORTSPAL that is a wonderful fishing canoe. I prefer a wooden boat. I love when its finished in a way so that you can see
the grain of the wood.

Now, just a second here. 10 grains is a ton of difference and fishing is about science and technology, no?

Update on "Weighing Your Line vs. Watching Paint Dry" | #58 | ||
|
"Watching Paint Dry" has established a definitive lead over "Weighing Your Line"
and should probably win in a walk. Unless there is a sudden spike in interest by forumites spurred on by our ardent forum line weighers, we could be forced to turn attention here to other urgent issues of the day, none of which comes readily to mind at the moment. 6-20-09: Well we gave it a pretty good ride. And it's kind of restful now to know that The Little Forum That Time Forgot currently has a sparsity of issues (or at least a quasi-paucity of them) so that everyone can get in a little problem-free fishing. If you're at peace with a quasi-paucity, so is this thread. Zzzzzzzzzz (sound effect either for snoring or for a non-silent-check reel feeding out line to a fish).

The "wooden" handled clubs you refer to are hickory shafted clubs, and they predate steel shafted clubs of the 1920s. There is a big group nationally that holds tournaments where only hickory shafts and persimmons woods are allowed. It's very similar to fishing very old bamboo rods. The skill it takes to make those clubs is not unlike what goes into making a fine bamboo flyrod. I don't play any hickory shafted clubs, but I do appreciate the craftsmanship, skill, and feel of a real persimmon wood. It's not that unlike the reasons many of us love bamboo flyrods. Each is the product of a master craftsman honing skills that have been passed down for generations from one artisan to another. Take a look at the Lousiville Golf website and you will see a lot of similarities in what they make, and how they make it to what we love about bamboo fly rods. I feel the same way about fine Kentucky and Pennsylvania long rifles. There are craftsmen today who are still making these beautiful guns like they were made 200 years ago. I think there is a longing in many of us for times that were more simple and not so hurried and mass produced. I know bamboo rods help fulfill that desire for me. Bill Anderson, Sarsota, Fl.
