My reel, broke the winding knob again... looks like I'll just have to make a new one.

Mark, Lovely tackle! That is a striking brown with the reel minus the knob. Where is it from? Also, what kind of skull is that with the Bougle'
lightweight?

bow river wrote:Rich - The rod is indeed a rocket. I was casting a two-fly rig some 70' into a very stiff Madison River wind the other day...and that was with a Cortland Peach DT-5...a line not exactly know for its power or distance-casting properties. The real kicker on this rod for me, though, is I was able to entice a couple of ultra-selective Henry's Fork rainbows to take my offerings on the first couple of casts...with as little as 5' of line and 15' of leader out. There aren't too many rods that can do both. I love the rod and would recommend it to anybody looking for a light (mine weighs only 3.75 oz. !!!!), powerful stick with a fine tip. -Mark |

Reel research & conclusive results | #471
|
At no expense I spent this morning doing research on behalf of forum members.
In a balanced test, 2 hours each, same rod, same stretch of water (more or less), it was conclusively proved that the Bougle caught more fish than the Doc Hermann (2 to 1) but the Hermann caught bigger fish. Brian |

Ahh, Brian! How sweet it is! Thank you so much for this free research and congrats on both these fine reels!

The test results are invalidated. Note the different colored lines on the reels. Surely this affected results! Everyone knows a yellow line is a big fish
line. For shame Brian!

Thanks Tom, yeah, happy with both.
Note the different colored lines on the reels. Surely this affected resultsI worried about that too Spey, so I used such long leaders and tippets that the fly and the line were in different systems (ohh that orange thing, I ordered a spare DT4, assuming it would be pastel blue like last one, man, that's Dayglo!, apologies to traditionalists )

Congrats Brian ! Though you may have to do further research to make sure the line color didn't matter
I had an hour to kill after work today and introduced another Bogdan to the joys of chasing the Golden Ghost
My own research was seeing if I'd be hit by lightening for fishing carp with a Bogdan.......but two outings with two different Bogdan reels and so far so good

I'm biased because I have one, but the teardrop Bougle is one of the prettiest fly reels ever made.

Mark B - carp Q... | #478 | ||
|
Turtledoc - Are you able to catch carp on dry flies? There's a similar looking carp in a local lake, and they noodle around in the shallows, finning and
boiling in schools, but they ignore my dry flies. Any luck on top? best, Mark.

17" beaverdam cutthroat | #479

Not the largest, but definitely the best fish of the summer! I've been scouting out the small streams, the creeks driven over on the way to the more famous
waters. Plenty of surprises, including a 3rd year or so beaverdam with this great fish. Just before this my leg broke through an undercut bank, I went from
knee-deep to waist deep water instantly, and soaked half my body getting unstuck.

I had a nice day with this matchup; seven rainbows ranging from 13-24+ inches.
The best fish was 24.5." Hardy Perfect, 3 5/8". Box is marked "By appointment to King George V," which places it sometime between 1911 and 1936. The rod is the hard-working American Goodwin Granger 9053 Victory, c. 1938. I like the irony -- an aristocratic reel, a mountain man's rod.
