You know you have too many flyrods when.... |

I had a beautifully restored Bristol Edwards f7 8.5, plus an unrestored twin. I can find them anywhere. They may be in the under floor storage of an suv that
I sold 2 years ago. Or I might have left them at a bamboo get-together. Or they're still somewhere in the house. In the course of the search, I
re-discovered an old SA reel, plus a graphite rod. The bottom line - I have too much stuff to keep track of.

I know what you mean. Someone e-mails you for pics of a fly rod that you know you have, your pretty sure you didn't sell it or trade it off, and even
though all your fly rods are located in only 2 locations in the house it takes you over 1/2 and hour to find the right rod anyway. Or even worse, after
searching for a rod for over 1/2 an hour you finally find that the rod you are looking for you took out of the closet and the tube is one of many sitting in
the corner of you computer/rod room.
Even though I may have too many rods now, I have the "disease" and still desire more. Maybe when I end up with one for every day of the year(365) I'll have enough, but I doubt it. I had a similar issue with fishing lures and finally decided to display a good deal of them on in a case on the wall of my rod/computer room and also the wall of my office at work. Ed |

I used to log my rods into an Access database. Including parts rods it was on the north side of 175 as of sometime in 2008, but I think it's below 150 now.
Problem is, now I can't even find the database......

When the fly rod count = the wifes pair shoes count, you might have enough fly rods.
And as a few of the wise men of this forum have stated in the past, never ever store all of your rods in one place where they can be counted by someone else.

Lately, I've been trying to catch up on cataloging my rods, since I've gotten a little behind. My records show a few more than 150 rods, but I did a
physical count one evening a couple months ago. It took 2 glasses of wine and over an hour and a half to find that I had 204 rods here, and another 8 on their
way, or out for repairs. It was sure fun re-discovering some of my rods that I hadn't seen for a while!
While I was sorting through them, I selected a dozen or so that I want to fish over the next couple of months. One of my goals is to fish at least 25 different Montys for at least a day each this summer. Man, is it hard to decide from one trip to the next! . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

I agree that you can not have too many rods. I have 261 catalogued and a couple laying around that need to be added. My biggest problem is deciding which rods
to take when I go fishing. I have a couple I always want to take along, but also want to try each of those in good condition. Fortunately, my wife knows I
could have much worse hobbies and is quite understanding. Also, shortly after a new rod arrives, there is a significant increase in quilting material that I
must step around.

This is a terrible thread............
For the more competitive among us, there will never be enough rods/time/money. Benny Hill said , "If one isn't enough, a thousand isn't too many". I know he was thinking of fly rods. When I just fish one rod........ I think I catch more fish. Why don't I do it? A friend came over to look at a rod, to check the color of the blueing, and I couldn't find the rod. Had I lent it to someone, mixed it in among the clutter, sequestered it under floor boards, put it in one of the walls for safe hiding? No, I had merely put it in a new tube. My pulse rate is back to normal, I know were the rod is again, life is good. But it got a little scary for a while..... I can't begin to recall the mental gymnastics and rationalizations that popped into my head. So to compound the problem a favourate rod making friend tells me he has five new rods in his for-sale list. Including a Dickerson 6611 which I have been after him to make. If I get this, I can put it along side the 6'5" Midge version that he made for me last year........... that has been cast a couple of times but has not seen the water. Along with this, is the bamboo to be straightened, the finish planing on another, the milling or another two, the glueing of another, the handle waiting to be sanded on another and some taper-change ideas for a couple of old classics. Not to mention how I am going to acquire a spare set of blanks, the sibling of an absolutely incredible 7'6" hollow built #5. Easily one of the best casting, light in the hand, best feeling rods that I have ever had my paws on. Think of Carrol Shelby and his AC Cobra 289, his "Immaculate conception vehicle", and you will be getting close. Yes I need this........ The only chance I have is that the maker, who is a well respected contributor to this forum, doesn't read this, and in a weak moment takes pity on me, and that I have something that he needs, so we can do the necessary. Catharsis..................... with Grayrock a week away, and the chance to renew acquaintances with some Brunner, Payne, Dickerson, Young and Jennings creations. This is not an easy time. The opening to the Grayrock barbecue is highlighted this year with a new topic, presented by wives and significant others, "Living with a bamboo addict- from the wife's perspective". My wife tells me she would like a few minutes, to share, and help set the tone. This should be interesting.......... Peter |

I'm planning to sell all my Heddon rods including a #1000, #50, #35 2x and multiple rods of all the other grades, then all my Grangers, Phillipsons and
my South Bends and then hoping I can get my collection to under 200 rods but knowing that just selling every one from those makers I'll probably still have
over 300 rods!
Will I miss them??? Hell, I have so many I don't even remember them... I know I have too many rods when... I found a circa 1870 Orvis that I didn't remember I bought or owned and just stumbled upon it the other day. I haven't a clue as to when I bought it or how much I paid for it... I know I have too many rods when... I don't know where that Heddon 1000 is and I can't find my Orvis 1860-70 salmon rod that I've been looking for, for about a month. |

I suggested to a friend that he catalog his rods........ To get an accurate list of what he had. There was a week or so of phone calls, telling me that he
had found a few more Homer Jennings rods, then a few Jennings/Moran rods, and then a few days later some Moran rods and blanks. All unfished.
