Jane and I just booked a flight for the week of July 17th to the 24th. Any advice would be appreciated. Will spend a few days in Boulder (We're old
socialists) and the rest in Estes Park I'm guessing. Does Boulder creek hold trout? Will run off be done by then? Hope to meet some of you like Mike, Kat
and Chuck. I asked my good friends for info and they all nixed me so I have to come here to seek public help. Really would appreciate any advice anyone has re:
lodging and fishing. Thanks in advance.

By all means make it to the RMNP. We went in on the west side through Estes Park, then set up camp on the Big Thompson River, at Moraine Park Camp Grounds.
Lot's to see and do. Good fishing on the river and nice day hikes into back country lakes. One good little hike is to Cub Lake, although fishing there is
hampered, due to lily pads covering most of the shoreline surface. Lots of Elk present throughout the park. We made the trip over to the west side via trail
Ridge Road. We were hoping to see Moose. The most dissapointing site to see was that most of the west side, and far South is bug kill trees as far as the
eye can see. Stay on the East side.

Hi Andre - I'll be around during that time, and will be happy to fish some. If you're staying in Estes, you'll be near the small creeks in the park
or the medium-sized Big Thompson. The Big T runs alongside a busy road, so it's not exactly a wilderness experience. If you're up for some driving, or
want to stay in other places, you'll have access to bigger water - the Colorado, S Platte, Poudre, etc.
Let's stay in touch. I imagine poudre1 may be willing to play hookie for a day or to as well.

Hey Andre,
Boulder Creek does indeed hold trout! In fact, it's a terrific fishery and receives a lot less pressure than some other nearby streams. I'll be doing some guiding this summer for Front Range Anglers on Boulder Creek and RMNP, so drop in and say hi, or shoot me a PM before you come out. Second half of July is the best time of year to fish the park. I can point you toward some fantastic greenback fishing in the park if you're up for a steep hike. Bring plenty of stimi's and don't forget your hopper and beetle patterns. Mark |

Chuck, Be prepared to wait all day if Andre finds a rising fish and tries every fly in his box in an attempt to catch it, only to find that it's a stick bobbing up and down it he water. |

Thanks for the link and I remember seeing it the first time. Mark and Kermit thanks for the info and great pics... I just noticed the elk. Howard, I do have friends ask Rolf and we all catch exactly the same amount of fish every time out.

"Kind, compassionate, generous to a fault, handsome, sincere, loyal, possibly the best fly fisherman east of the Pacific Ocean, Andre catches and then
releases 99.8% of his trout unseen and unmentioned because he holds his friends' self esteem too fragile(yet valuable to him) to jeopardize by relating
the truth of his skills on the water. He has been compared to Theodore Gordon, Roderick Haig-Brown, John Voelker, Winston Churchill, Ghandi and John Gierach
but most find him to be more a compilation of the best qualities of all those men with a dash of George Clooney thrown in for the women."
And this is the kind of response he has gotten from his closest fishing buddies: "I remember the Park Ranger telling me and a buddy of mine not to feed the ground squirrels because they carried the Bubonic Plague. This was back in the Late 70's. Other than that not much." A modern case of Gulliver on the Island of Lilliput? If Mistakes are the Wellspring of Wisdom how come I ain't Solomon?

Andre', you ask;"Does Boulder Creek hold trout?" And I reply; "Is the Bear Catholic?" I studied Italic under the late E. Schwiebert in college. I lived in Boulder for eleven years,
tied flies for Hank Roberts for three, and even caught a trout in front of the Boulder library whilst giving casting lessons for the shop. Lower Boulder creek
(in town) had a fine population of stocker rainbows then, but you could take somewhat wilder trout just east of town. Como creek, tributary to North Boulder
provided the base stock for the current population of greenback cutthroat throughout the state. With the activism of the Socialist Boulder Fly Casters,
I'm sure they have stocked Boulder Creek (and the nearby St. Vrain ) with grayling and landlocked salmon.
Go West! Young man...

Andre,
Yeah, go to the Celestial Seasonings Co. in Boulder and go on the tour. Have a nice cup of chamomile tea and mellow out, man. You're much too hyper. You're not going to catch those western trout with that Jersey vibe going on. |
