You fellas ever consider fishing where there are NO bears?

For most of the 4 legged or no-legged critters I worry about, my ash wading staff will suffice. For two legged varmints, I carry a Smith and Wesson
Titanium/Scandium, concealed hammer J frame .38 Special in a front pocket. Here in south Florida, shorts are the norm, so a super light handgun is about the
only thing that can be carried discretely. I spent several years as a deputy sheriff, so going armed with a handgun is no big deal for me. My Florida
resident's concealed weapon permit is honored in 34 states. I just got back from a road trip to Arkansas, and it rode in my pocket all the way (car travel
of course). I crossed Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas, and it was comforting to know I could carry concealed leagally in all those
states. Carrying a concealed handgun is a HUGE responsibility, and not to be taken lightly. I go out of my way to avoid places and confrontations, but I'm
determined that neither myself, or my family is going to be a victim. I know first hand what kind of Godless, subhuman scum is out there. No, I'm NOT
paranoid: I've just had quite a bit of "hands on" experience with criminals.

No bad brown bears in Wisconsin. My biggest worry is getting stung by wasps while out in the boonies. I'm allergic and carry Epi-Pens for protection, but
they can only do so much. Otherwise, in over 40 years of trout fishing, I've only had one threatening situation. My buddy and I were spinner fishing many
years ago when we encountered a fly fisherman. He flashed a .45 auto and demanded that we leave "his" stretch of public water. We just walked away
from that jerk and fished downstream.

Southbranch wrote:It happens. 30 years ago when I first moved to the genteel and liberal bastion that is Massachusetts from a place where guns are more of a way of life - yet had never once seen anyone carrying a gun on stream - I went out for my first day of fishing locally. Trying to find my way around the river I came crashing through some bushes to find a guy standing mid-stream. I said, "Good morning! Sorry, I didn't see you there." I would have never gone near the water if I had seen him. He just glowered at me over the top of his glasses and said, "I'm fishin' here." That was when I noticed the side arm strapped to his wading belt. I told him, "Yes you are and good luck to you" and retreated to head downstream. A condom around big old brown bears? I'd be wishing I had a diaper.

If we outlaw condoms, only the outlaws will have condoms.

Southbranch, I am highly allergic to insect bites like you but do not carry the Epi-pen. I carry a small travel size tube of Colgate Toothpaste and some
antihistamine tablets in my vest. If I am bitten I immediately rub a small amount of the toothpaste on the bite and if bitten more than once will also take an
antihistamine pill. Whatever is in the toothpaste neutralizes the bite even if it is a bee or wasp. I used to swell up and itch for days after being bitten....
no more. I learned this trick from a Canadian fisherman friend who said they used toothpaste all the time for black fly bites. Bob

I've heard the same being said about urine. I think I prefer to use toothpaste instead. Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out!

Hei!
I'm happy I live in a place where we're not allowed to take handguns to the river. I'm also happy I live in a place where I don't have to bring guns to the river. Idar Ps! About the condoms, there was an article in a norwegian fishing mag not long ago where condoms were used as a float (for lack of something else). If I remember correctly, the rubber was tied as a balloon onto the line, the wind then transported the fly across the lake. It was supposedly quite effective. |

It didn't take long for someone to take this thread to a new low! I think you should just turn this into a good ol' fashioned bash
America thread.
For all of you who don't live in the U.S., you now understand that we're all BAD BAD BAD people. Lonnie |
