1912 2 7/8" Perfect auction results |

I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the gorgeous 1912 check 2 7/8" Hardy Perfect and original case that sold on an internet auction site
yesterday for just shy of $2400.
Wonderful provenance and great condition. Surely a centerpiece of any Hardy collection. Who got it? And congrats! Best regards,

Gorgeous reel, indeed. My objection was the size--too small, virtually unusable in that diameter. But w/ the original case it has that certain magnetism.

Isn't there something now about relisting it, or did
I just misread? I suppose it is a tad on the small side. But Hardy's current 2-7/8" Perfect is said to spool a 4-wt line with a little bit of backing. That's fishable. I have an old Golden West 80 that's a mere 2-1/2", but it will likewise spool a 4-wt. And I like to fish it because it oozes pizazz. It isn't inexpensive, of course, but it also isn't in the same orbit as a $2,400 1912 Perfect either. It would seem to me, therefore, to be the largeness of investment rather than the relative smallness of size which would cause hesitation about fishing it and would raise again that age-old question, "Would I flaunt it if I had it?" To me, the question is purely rhetorical. |

anyone complaining about 2-7/8" being too small to be practical is trying to justify not stepping up with a $2500 bid imo.

Yes, Chartist1, that would appear to be the case. Moreover,
if one scrolls down the page in the reel section, he will discover a very helpful thread on the particular usefulness and line capacity of the 2-7/8" reel. And now I see that Scott's happy experience confirms your view as well. |

The 1912 Perfect in question was one of the nicest reels I've ever seen--just lovely. I was thinking of digging deep, but regretfully not that deep. I
think the 2 7/8" size works quite nicely for a 4wt., both functionally and aesthetically. I just spooled a Hook and Hackle DT4 on mine with enough
backing to feel comfortable.

The untypically high price it reached surely was a big surprise for me.

Or maybe the last piece of a complete set of 1912 check Hardys. One never knows the motivations or limits of a purchaser.

Possibly the new owner wasn't thinking about fishing the Reel at all but merely adding a rare Reel to their collection ? In terms of size, I really like
the 2 7/8"on a 4wt. I find its a nice balance witht the Rods I use.
As far as cost goes, How many 1912 check 2 7/8" Perfects do you see ? There are just not that many of these little Reels left. PCG, If you think that Perfect is unusable, Check out my 2 3/4" 1912 check, I can't figure out where to use this one so I will have to be content just to look at it for now.
Have a great Sunday everyone, Tight Lines Randy Law hardyguy |

My 1912 check is one of the most interesting Perfects I own--the sound with out-going line is almost silent, while in-coming is far more conventional. It's
a very sophisticated tuning, or judicious, or tasteful... Although those are unconventional terms to use. All in all, a reel to become fond of quickly.

Greg, Great pix. That is a reel I could seriously lust for. The smaller, wide Perfects just look so nicely proportioned.

Hey Richard:
While I have no doubt you'll pull it off, when you find and purchase "two better" Hardys for less than $2375, be sure to post them here on the Forum! But it has to be a "straight up" purchase...no fair trading any of your wonderful Dingleys! Best regards,

Another vintage Hardy was auctioned on that site today. A 1903 Bougle went for over $3600. It appeared to be in excellent condition with an unaltered reel
foot.

for you flyman
first is this 3 1/8 with waisted pillers and a brass face perfect , next is a 3 inch wide drum brass face perfect , both 100% correct , both 1896 check , and add them both togeather and they still cost me less then that 1912 check perfect that just ended
and in this group of hardys , pretty well pick 2 reels and still less then that 1912 hardy , i wanted that reel , and chatted with the seller , one could of had it for $2100 , i still thought it was just to high , left on ebay it went for even more , i'll wait , alot of great reels showing up with the times , i think the 1912 with the blue agate was a better reel , and if the agate was 100% correct which i think it might of been it was a better reel IMHO , i have bid on 4 x 1912 check hardys in the last few weeks , always come second and i don't mind coming second , sooner or later i'll come in first ,
Rich
