It's only a thread, but in fact a thread for the deposit of leftovers and scrapings from tired psyches of classic fly rod fishermen unable to find elsewhere a haven for their cares and fantasies--a public service in that regard. I know that explanation might smack to you of the sort of altruism waste management companies are currently brazening in advertisements on the tube. And I don't mean to minimize your concern either. For the very same sentiment as yours has been voiced by world leaders on the eve of a war, by anglers after stepping into quicksand, and by Whistler's mother: Can't believe I'm getting drawn into this.

Paha Sapa Bill; I was considering your offer of a volunteer, but after looking up the definition of a generation I guess I could be considered part of your
generation. We will have to look for someone younger and I would like to nominate Martin.Mr. Batten after living within a few minutes of the river probably
longer than you are old I hope the killer part has nothing to do with killing anything in or around the river. grumpy old fart

Wasn't it Mae West, Pat, who said, "Goodness, my dear,
has nothing in the world to do with it"? |

No, wasn't that Dorothy Parker? Or do I have my decades mixed up?

No, in fact it was Mae West.
Observer: Goodness what lovely diamonds. Mae West: Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie. West often opined about goodness, as in: When I'm good, I'm very, very good. But when I'm bad, I'm better. But, you're right, Pat. Dorothy Parker was no slouch either when it came to "exposing" the mores of her society for what they were (hypocritical) and what they weren't (binding). She said when she was at The New Yorker, her office formerly served as the men's john, the only place in the building where men seemed to know what they were doing. Here are a few more of my favorite Parkerisms: Brevity is the soul of lingerie. If all girls who attended the Yale prom were laid end to end, I wouldn't be a bit surprised. How much poorer America is without them.

And she's quoted as saying,
I don't care what is written about me so long as it isn't true. A tremendous wit & I can't think of anyone writing today who has that same levity & the same self-assurance. Thanks for the great quotes, BHB. |

BHB and Oneculm are certainly 2 of my heroes also, along with Dylan, Phil Ochs and Townes ( Blues heroes being a whole different set) . Dorothy Parker and Mae
West deserve consideration for my personal pantheon as well after reading the above, wonderful wits with a the sort of humorous insights we don't get too
often from our entertainers today, at least on the female side. I can't come up with the Dylan song you refer to Dave, this over 60 thing is a constant
challenge. Does anyone know what kind of rod Clapton broke in a fall wading that upset him so much he resolved to confront his heroin addiction, or so the
story goes?

But No Kinks in His Rods | #94 | ||

Keep in mind, Bob, this fellow defeated the scourge of the bamboo
rod, the set, by becoming broad-minded and using glass, which of course springs back to straightness on its own without special coaxing or a heat treatment. That might or might not be symptomatic and metaphorical. All we can do is welcome him to the thread and hope for the best. |

Bing Crosby or ?????
Just heard a 1930 recording of St. Louis Blues by Bing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Pretty fair jazz singer, and probably the best popular music singer of his, or any era. And he really was a fly fisher, and activist. His records were banned in Denmark due to his vocal (sorry) opposition to commercial Atlantic salmon fishing. |

Okay, fine. Let's go with the cartoon/animation theme, but let's at least pick characters that are of the age of consent.

The winds have abated, and I am in a dandy mood.
Hail, Gentlemen. You're well met. Now jumping right into this morning's contest, I vote for Olive Oyl, the original "it" woman, who, during all of my childhood and then for my entire adult life, has managed to keep both Popeye and Bluto on a string. "String" looks as if it might be as close as we get to fly-fishing today, and even it is a stretch. I tried, Dave, to find the Dylan song you had in mind and have decided it can't be "Maggie's Farm," but that that one is worth mentioning anyway. You should ask him whose name we cannot mention, for he who knows the entire sweep of American music. So unless rust and barnacles (keeping with our Popeye-Olive Oyl theme) have settled upon his brainpan, he will know. Mac, I'd take Sinatra over Crosby, but Bing Crosby over everybody else--all those movies with Barry Fitzgerald and the other ones with Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour and plenty of points for his fishing. The Catholic church in my hometown, Lead, had a speaker in its steeple which wafted Bing's Christmas music out over the little mining village. This started only three weeks or so before the holiday so that we would be able to distinguish it from a commercial enterprise. Life there sometimes could be too hardscrabble to mistake it for Currier and Ives. But--it may be my mood--I truly believe it was a wonderful thing.

To bring Mr Dylan within the terms and conditions (?huh?) of this forum may I offer the following quote:
Build me a cabin in Utah, Marry me a wife, catch rainbow trout, Have a bunch of kids who call me "Pa," That must be what it's all about, That must be what it's all about. Bob Dylan |
