Router bit to mortise reel seat insert? |
Lead | ||
|
What router bit should be purchased to mortise reel seat inserts for most cap and ring style? It seems that some recommend Venneri's 5/8" modified bit
as well as C1215 fingernail bit from Grizzly. I plan on utilizing a dedicated router table setup in conjunction with a jig like in Cattanach's book.
However, does the C1215 need to be modified in the form of being reground to the proper profile in order to be used? Also, are there any bits that would work
from other places such as MLCS? Thanks.

I think the size will depend on the diameter of the wood spacer you are going to use. But whatever you get (even a Venneri modified bit) will have to be
reground to the profile that will give you the proper mortise:
The following two images illustrate the grinding that is required:

The bit that is cut on an angle like the one shown will only work on a slide band seat. I have my bits modified to the correct size without the angles for more
versatility . These bits can also be used on screw locks and they match the threaded barrel perfectly. I have a few bits in stock but not many .

Any tricks on setting the router bit height? It looks like it would be easy, but even when the eyeball says it's dead center, the cut says you're
wrong. Thanks, Henry.

The key to repeating any set up is to make a height gauge to measure to the top of the bit. Use trial and error to set it once they use or make a height gauge
to repeat it. Look at a machinist height gauge for motivation but a homemade one will work fine. Same concept as setting a cutter height on a lathe.

Jimmy hit it right on the head I eyeball but it is never good enough then I use the height gage to zero it in. But if you use a dedicated set up and reference
off of the OD using a v then once the height is set you never have to adjust again . only have to adjust the fence.
