this is how to beat the 100-degree south Texas heat
this cypress tunnel on the "middle" Guadalupe R. is about two miles long with just a few sunny breaks
in our drought, the fish are really stacked up in any pockets
Ken is standing on a waist-deep hole (sorry I got the spider webs in front of his face) where we could see the fish and could certainly see them lunge for our flies
Texas brook trout - endemic Guadalupe bass - these little guys really put up a fight, with blazing trout-like runs and maybe greater stamina.
long ears
even catfish - Ken caught a 4-lber
we were also catching many green sunfish, just a few native cichlids, and warmouth
8 of us went out and almost all of us had 100-fish days
not big, but between us we did land 10 or 12 Guadalupe bass in the 13" to 15" range
I sight-fished this puppy, and it took 3 casts before he grabbed the fly
I know it doesn't look like much, but he made the St. George scream to the end of the fly line on his first run, and he turned back downstream 3 times.
I think we'll go back
The rod was made by Floyd Burkett of Universal City, TX. He calls the rod the Guadalupe
It's a 7'10" semi-parabolic 5-wt. based on a Cattanach taper.
Floyd makes everything, including machining all the hardware, with the reel seat and hex rod tube made from Mesquite
The rod truly was made for this water and this fishing.
