Posts: 4 06/29/2009 20:49	Tags : None I normally put about six inches of 20 lb (.018) MonicLite floating monofilament on the ends of my 4-5 wt lines, but when I matched the material (by stiffness) to the end of the Terenzio DT4 it was way too stiff. (I don't want open loops.) I ended up using Frog Hair 20 lb mono (.013) which matches the line stiffness very closely but not 60% of the diameter of the line end (.032). This raises the question of the best leader to use. I built two leaders, both from Frog Hair material. The first, my own design, is 60" .013, 20" 1x, 10" 3x, ending in a loop to which I will loop a 24" 4x or 5x tippet. The second, via Leadercalc, is a Borger dry fly formula: 48" .013, 12" 1x, 48"5x. I'll give these a try, but I think that the furled leaders that I ordered from John Quigley will be better. (Thanks Caneheads for letting me know about his leaders). What are your thoughts about leaders? Jim

Posts: 218 06/29/2009 21:23	Jim, I fish both Terenzio and Phoenix silk lines. Because of the suppleness of silk lines, I've had my best results using the Terenzio silk leaders. These match the line's suppleness and work like an extension or continuation of the line. I've also used uni-thread furled leaders with satisfactory results.

Posts: 3120 06/30/2009 06:55	My thoughts and opinions on leaders, based on personal experience and lots of reading. The 60% of line diameter is mostly a relic of the gut leader days. Well soaked gut is a lot less stiff then nylon, so it worked out ok. The butt section (or energy transfer section) is supposed to transfer the energy from the fly line to the leader, I tend to think along the lines of "flexible weight" here. Longer butt, of not too stiff material. You could probably go up to 0.015 for the butt and not be worried. Play around with different stiffnesses too; the silk line usually carries a good bit of energy (less air resistance because of smaller diameter than equivalent plastic lines) and the loop may not open up as much as you'd think. Furled leaders (silk or thread or even mono) are a good match, but make sure you put a long enough tippet on the other end. Sometimes they are too efficient at transferring the energy from the line and turn over too vigorously. Ok if you are fishing nymphs (tuck casts easier), but with dry flies a little slack (S Curves) are often desired to reduce drag. This signature left intentionally blank.

Posts: 1261 06/30/2009 07:22	For several seasons I have used an Orvis braided leader with my Thebault lines. I cut the leader butt back to the point where it is 2/3 the diameter of the silk line tip ( usually 4-5" off) and nail knot the leader to the line. It holds up for years and turns over great.

Posts: 199 06/30/2009 08:32	I fish a Terenzio or Phoenix line almost all the time. For me the superior casting abilities and feel make silk well worth the extra trouble. I use Terenzio's silk leaders with both with excellent results. Turns over very delicately and smoothly. More like an extension of the fly line than any leader I have ever tried. I put a surgeons loop at each end of a 6 inch piece of 2 or 3x and loop the tippet to this. I use 5-6 feet of tippet and the leader and it lay out in the prettiest s curves you have ever seen. Only trick is that the leaders soak up a good bit of mucilin. The delicacy of this rig has really helped me in some very very difficult rises. For me there is just no comparision to any mono or flouro furled or single leader I have tried. Life is too short for cheap scotch and plastic rods. Tight Lines!!! -M

When fishing nymphs, I use a furled leader made of flurocarbon as it sinks very quickly, so it's more effective for that type of fishing. For dry fly fishing, it's ditto to what Marty said.... a 8" to 12" piece of soft 3x material connected with a double surgeon's loop and to this add 4 to 6' of tippet. This will give you those "S curves" to avoid slack.

Posts: 5 07/01/2009 14:07	Thanks for all the information. Since I'm retired I'll have to go fishing tomorrow to test everything out. BTW, when experimenting I found that there is a great deal of difference of stiffness between mono brands using the same pound test.
