I normally put about six inches of 20 lb (.018) MonicLite floating monofilament on the ends of my 4-5 wt lines, but
when I matched the material (by stiffness) to the end of the Terenzio DT4 it was way too stiff. (I don't want open loops.) I ended up using Frog Hair 20
lb mono (.013) which matches the line stiffness very closely but not 60% of the diameter of the line end (.032). This raises the question of the best leader
to use. I built two leaders, both from Frog Hair material. The first, my own design, is 60" .013, 20" 1x, 10" 3x, ending in a loop to which I
will loop a 24" 4x or 5x tippet. The second, via Leadercalc, is a Borger dry fly formula: 48" .013, 12" 1x, 48"5x. I'll give these a
try, but I think that the furled leaders that I ordered from John Quigley will be better. (Thanks Caneheads for letting me know about his leaders).
