Posts: 1 06/12/2009 15:46	Tags : None hello everyone. thanks for being here. i have just stumbled upon this vast weath of knowledge,and am glad i did. i am new to fly fishing (i am 30 years of age and picked up my first fly rod last season. scince then i have become intoxicated with the art. starting the season out fresh i had purchased a sage trout rod and love it. hav ebeen researching for months now and have been tying my own flies to boot! i came across a bamboo flyrod last year , and proceeded to purchase it. i fell in love with the craftsmanship of her and started researching the art of making split cane rods. after many pages read and pictures viewed i decided i woul like to accumulate the tools to tyr my hand at building myself a rod. but that is a whole other story. i am here now and was wondering wether or not to try and repair and refinish my cane rod. as far as i know the rod i have is a HEDDON #8 9-1/2' 3f . but need some work it is missing two of its snake guides on the second section. and the guides have slight rust on them. i will post pics in case anyone would like to chime in on this subject .... thanks for listening! Ditto on getting Michael's book and if interested in the history of Heddon bamboo rod then also get his Heddon book. Michael is in the hospital at the moment, but he normally hangs out here on the list. He might be able to get you signed copies when he's back and on his feet. Again, welcome to the group and hang onto your wallet, it can become an expensive habit, errr hobby.

I'll second Dr. Todd's suggestion that you should find a cheap project rod to practice on first. Once you feel good about it, dive into restoring this rod. Posts: 1023 06/30/2009 19:34 Angry Andy	Dear TBVI, Lots of old bamboos on eBay that can be obtained at very modest bids. I'd recommend nothing longer than 8 1/2'. Be sure to ask questions pertaining to individual section lengths, condition of ferrules, reel seat condition, overall lamination, and the extent of sets in the different sections. If possible get the seller to state whether or not there are any soft sets (a condition caused by moisture in the bamboo resulting in sets that don't spring back to their original shape when when bent) in the tips. If possible, stay away from rods without an extra tip. Michael Sinclair's book is a must. Without it you are likely to make some regrettable mistakes. Likely good deals can be made on Montagues, HI's, Shakespeare, Union Hardware, South Bend, and Sport King to name a few. You might also investigate some of the vendor sites dealing in used bamboo. A good staring site would be Len Codella's (http://www.codella.com/ ) list of used rods. A good book to read and reference is Wayne Cattanach's "Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods". If you are interested in the way bamboo rods are made, from culm to the final detail, you are not likely to find a better book. Good luck!! Posts: 2 07/04/2009 14:38	thanks for the good words and advice everyone. as for buying more rods . we shall see what turns up . the most important thing right now is to read the books you all have pointed out. the real addiction will be learning to make them. so i need to gather tools of the trade. forms and a binding machine seem to be the top of the list right now.planes micrometers and such can be found anywhere. if anyone knows where to pick up a binding machine..... that would help me out very much. i have searched and searched and cannot locate one.
