I may have just bought a blue grouse skin... what do I tie with it??? I've never seen a call for blue grouse hackle.....

Some interesting feathers for soft hackles Grouse have some nice speckles that look really great. Try some various sizes and bodies see what works for
your fish.

That was my basic concept, and I'm amazed that our buddy BHB hasn't piped up!!! I'm operating from a photo of the skin, and I know grouse... so I figured... what the heck? We use up a lot of soft hackle and variations thereto here in tailwater country, as well as on the little mountain streams... so we'll never go wanting for something to tie. Fishing must really be hot in Cheese Country for either of the dueling "old Air Force farts" not to have joined in on this conversation. Ralph |

BHBoobie has been in Cheese Country for the past week away from a PC until EARLY yesterday morning while staying at a friend's daughter's place in Madison. I've never seen a Blue Grouse skin but I did an internet search and found some pics ..... the bluish / grayish neck hackles looks pretty interesting as do the speckled hackles further back. The neck hackles look like they could be used as a sub for some hen hackles ... and I'd even try a few on Tup's soft hackles and blue duns, etc. Naturally, if some of the blue grouse hackles flew to Illinois, there "might" be a few SHs tied (with and without BHs) in the coming future. Best BHBoobie PS - It's only 1000 hrs here in the midwest, so the "elderly gentleman"(?) is probably still sleeping. By the way, did you know that the "EG"(?) just got a new computer .... I think this one isn't using DOS, so he'll be in a learning curve for awhile ! |
