Probably this is a question for the rod makers out there. First, let me state that I own and like 3-piece rods because of the ease of transportation on
planes. Other than that, I have not thought too much about which is the better design for casting and fighting trout - 2 versus 3 piece. But I have my eye on
a 7 1/2 - 3 piece 5 wt. rod and I have been thinking about several issues. One question I have is that due to the second ferrule in 3-piece designs, does the
tip section have more stress on it when casting - which may lead to problems down the road? It would seem that it does due to the fact that the ferrule is
metal and does not bend - puting more stress on that tip section. I would assume that 3-piece rods are designed differently than 2 piece rods and allow for
this extra stress?? The other question is are 2-piece rods less stressful on the tip when fighting trout - again due to the flexibility of not having that
second ferrule?
