I've long been a fan of this fly and Wright's fishing technique for the caddis. This year, my wife found me a mint copy of his book. A treasured
gift!

I found a good picture and some information on the FAOL site. It's in the fly archives.

Think that would be the Fluttering Caddis....there's a nice photo on the cover of Wright's book "Fishing the Dry Fly as a Living Insect" plus
illustrations of how he tied it. A great fly and technique. Cheers.

In my book, on page 36-- ( book that is mentioned and posted by Catskill John and Battenkiller in Collecting and Tying Classic Flies under the Topic :"
Valla's New Book"--which see) there is an image of Wright's Caddis that is tied by him that I photographed. There's a bit I've written
about Wright, too, in those pages.

Dear Bow-River (and Bobbeegee). As per your request, I've posted an image of an authentic Len Wright Fluttering Caddis that I photographed. I'm am in the middle of getting out of the pic hosting service I use. So don't be surprised if it vanishes soon! This image appears on page 36 of my book that was mentioned on this Forum in a Topic graciously and very kindly posted by Catskill John RE: "Valla's Book"--which see. "Tying Catskill Style Dry Flies" I've written a bit about Lenny Wright in the book...with some interesting people he interacted with concerning some "activities" on his beloved Neversink. (you've probably not heard of but extremely influential --but I won't ruin that story here! ) Wright was extremely particular about how the fly should be tied, how to lay-down the spade hackle, body into the hook bend etc. etc. --Mike Valla http://www.amazon.com/rea...TF8&ref%5F=sib%5Fdp%5Fpt http://www.kossiedun.com.au/valla_mike.htm

Thank you Mike!
That is one great pattern, and tie, by Mr. Wright. I'll bet some particularly stiff hackle would really make this caddis flutter? Great photo also. Bob p.s. I'll be buying your book Mike! Go Heels!!! |

Some people replace the hackle wing with mink tail.

Indeed. I *think* it was Eric Leiser who first promoted mink tail for that purpose and others, but that's working off the top of my head. I could be wrong.
Anyway, mink tail fibers are good stuff for sure.
"Fishing the Dry Fly as a Living Insect" was an eye opener for me as far as insect/trout behavior and technique go, but I'll be a buzzkill about Wright's caddis pattern. With all respect to Wright...try as I might...I never did well with it. As best I can tell it's both too much fly and not enough fly. For emerging caddis I prefer a Yorkshire wet. For an inactive/minimaly active caddis emerger stuck in the film/cripple I prefer a wet fly hackled Henryville pattern dressed to mimic the natural. For a fully active adult getting off the water, a full dressed Henryville or Bivisible pattern with greased leader does the trick for me. |

slw wrote:I believe that Poul Jorgensen credited it to Larry Solomon someplace in "Modern Fly Dressings for the Practical Angler" (but that might have been a pattern and not the material) CORRECTION Sorry, I got it all bolixed up: PJ used mink tail (instead of deer hair) on a Larry Solomon caddis pattern, There's no suggestion as to origin.
