Posts: 379 04/26/2009 05:29	Tags : None Lt. Col. Oborn "Tenacity" 7 ft 4/5wt Just "won" this rod on the 'Bay. It's new / mint unused and has some wonderful vintage British / classic Hardy-like features like the grip and intermediates. A very classy looking rod that I have high expectations of. Especially for the price I was able to purchase it for, simply because it wasn't listed as a bamboo or split cane fly rod, but as a "cane trout rod". So there you go, there's still some nice stuff flying under the radar every now and then! It should be a great match with my 3 inch LHW St. George and a DT4 line. But who can provide me with some information about the maker? I've seen other rods (heavier trout and salmon models) of him being offered, sold and auctioned in the past, but I just can't find anything on the web, other than that mr. Oborn/Osborn/Osbourn/Osbourne lives or lived in Marnhull, Dorset (UK) and probably made these bamboo rods in the seventies. Posts: 2995 04/30/2009 17:31 Immoderatus Britannicus	Cannot help with any information but iirc the rods would have come through a Mullock's auction, one of the 9' were sold in July 08, I cannot recall which sale the other ones but there were 3 together in one sale not so long ago.

Posts: 645 05/01/2009 04:15	the look is reminscent of the Foster's of Ashbourne "Airsprite"- same length, reel seat, tapered cigar grip, and line weight. Stephen Woolley did a lot of their building over the last decades- now he makes the same rod models in his own shop. Might be a trade rod of the same design, or it might not be...

Posts: 393 05/03/2009 05:51	Thanks Freestoner, that's a very interesting (possible) connection. I've found a picture of an Airsprite here (lot 94) and it looks quite similar indeed. But as a trade name to me "Luitenant Colonel Osborn" doesn't really seem likely. Very interesting this, trying to find out more about a rod. Posts: 404 05/05/2009 11:42	The rod was delivered today. Unfortunately not any more information written on the rod than I already knew, other than that the builder is definitely a mr. Oborn. It's a very well built rod, and will make a great combination with my 3 inch LHW St. George. A very distinctive feature is the fly that's drawn on the cane above the stripping guide. Posts: 1 05/22/2009 12:13	Hi there, Dont know if you have found more about the Lt.Colonel but I met him at his home and on one occasion fished with him on Chew Valley Lake. I purchased a rod from him a 9ft. reservoir rod and saw him at work on the rod at his home which was Old Footfalls, Bat Lane, Marnhull Dorset. The Colonel was British Army (Retired), he had been a staff officer in Berlin immediately following the occupation. Several of my friends still own Oborn rods but my own will be going to auction in the near future. Hope this is of interest to you, Kind regards

Posts: 1 06/28/2009 17:15	Dear sir Having looked on google I happened to come accross your message, My father died twenty five years ago, the rod making was a lucrative hobby. He made them at our family home in Marnhull, Dorset in a small white shed, which still stands today, after retiring from the Armed Forces. He was self taught. He made Rods for Ian Hay (Rodbox, Winchester) & (Harrods). These must have been fine rods as he could never meet the demands. These were sold at approx £60-£70. I hope this information is helpful.
