Opinions on an unusual Dingley check |
Lead | ||
|
I'd appreciate comments on the unusual check on this Dingley. It's a 4" JA Walker Salmon reel. Most of the Dingley checks are analogs to Hardy
checks. But not this one (I think). Brian & I are working on a tech description for this reel. All "check gurus"--please check in with opinions!
Thanks, Pat

i had that same reel about 5 years ago , for sure a dingley , it is really not any diff then the small 3 inch brass rod caged dingley with the adjustable drag , same kind of check , just bigger , if you need a picture i can put one up for you , that check is one he put in that model of reel if it had a adjustable drag with strap over the tensioner , what is the best part about that check is ,, you only have to turn the adjustment about a half turn and you really get the drag now , a full turn and she's maxed out , on other reels , sometimes you have to turn that adjustment 10 full turns to get a feel of increase in the drag hope this helps you two ol farts

Thanks, Brian. I guess my question should have been asked differently... To my knowledge, these are unique to Dingley, that is, Hardy did not use a similar
check. Does anyone disagree, and if so, can you point me toward a similar Hardy (or Farlow etc)?

Pat, this is the only spring arrangement that I have seen that moves one caliper spring to inhibit the motion of the pawl, without compromising the tension in
the take-in direction. The Hardy caliper spring adjusters applied the tension, at the compromise of the caliper's range of motion (and sound); this
Dingley check allows varied checking while not dampening the calipers range of motion. I suspect this has quite the sound in the pay direction.

Sorry, Rich. Brian on the brain: That's not good for Brian. :-)
Stefan, can you post a photo or two of the Slater? |

Richard...Ain't it amazing how one can recognize an old friend instantly? Even after not seeing that friend for a while!

I am away at the moment but I believe John Stephensons book Rosewood to Revolution has some good pictures of the Slater Caliper check from reels pre 1900.

I'll take that as a compliment, Rich. And I admit to "a little excited" happening at times. :-)

Hey, you guys! That's my reel! Take a long, close look at the left-hand side of the spring and note that it does not return to complete an eccentric
circle but curves away in a sinuous 'question mark' and is pinned to the base. That's what I'm talkin' about! Am I right, Patrick?

Michael thats a really nice reel ,no pun intended. I noticed the different spring setup.I also did a bit of searching for pic,s of early silex,s and they don,t
look much like your reel.Item number: 180365527895 on ebay is an early one with a decent pic of inside check and my memory was off. Looking forward to pic,s of
Slater check. Daryl
