Sad? Yes, a bit, but only because she's not here so I can scratch her head and rub her belly. On the other hand, happy because of all the memories, and
because all the extra treats everyone else is giving their dogs tonight.
An example of some of the memories: each dog tangled with a skunk, about 6 months before the end. Bucca, at almost 12, with gimpy back legs, managed to actually catch it. He ran under the neighbors back deck, wouldn't come out, but when I told him to go home, he listened. Then Simi and I had to run after him because I couldn't remember if the door was open (we were out for last call). He did not like getting a bath at 9pm (white vinegar works well, but he was burping skunk for 3 months). Simi decided to say hi to one on our 0400 walk, luckily she was on a leash and didn't get it too bad, but she also did not like a bath first thing in the morning. Poor man's paraphrase of Will Rogers: When I die, send me where the dogs are. I don't care where it is, because to me it must be Heaven.

Mike, very sorry for the loss of your dog. I understand the pain you must feel. We lost one of ours about 1 1/2 years ago.The best dog I have ever had.
The hard part was after the injection as we watched him slip away, I had to immediately go to work where no one really understood the pain I was feeling. By the way my dogs have been blasted by skunks on four different occasions. Mix peroxide, baking soda and a little liquid detergent to help the solution adhere. We keep a least six quart size bottles of peroxide here at all times. Bob |

Bob, "luckily" my wife and I had the day off.
Mythbusters had a show on about "deskunkerizers", your mix was one of the ones they tested. It was the most effective.

My condolences mer. I know that loosing a pet is about as traumatic as loosing a family member, well a human family member. They love us without any condition
other than being fed and taken care of.
The trout takes the fly, the line tightens and it's like I was blind, but now I
see.

Mike, I think I spent a $100 or so on different skunk solutions until we happened upon the one I mentioned.
Again sorry about your loss. Jack's picture is there every time I open my phone. Bob |

Mer,
Sorry for your loss. I included a video link to one of my favorite cowboy poets. I think he sums it up... http://www.youtube.com/wa...ABPE&feature=related |

Mike,
All of us dog lovers fell your pain and share with you that wounderful feeling of unconditional love that only a dog can give. About the only thing God didn't get right was for dogs to have a life expectancy as long as us humans. Cherish your memories of your beloved companion. Bob |

Mike, I am sorry about the loss of your friend. Having owned labs for most of my life, I am also faced with making the same decision you have made, my
chocolate lab purchased for my son has gotten to the very end of where he can go. But I just can't bring myself to do it. Sometimes I wish I didn't
feel so strongly about him.......it would make this a lot easier.

So sorry for your loss. I've had one or two dogs with me almost my entire life, and the memories of those gone brings both great joy and sadness. I'm
definitely giving extra treats and hugs tonight.
Thanks, Geary |

Mike, my wife and I were in your shoes in December when Sky, our Shiba of 15 years had to be put down because he was in pain from the kidney disease. We cried
for a week. He was very special to us because he was a returned puppy to the breeder as someone couldn't handle him.
In 15 years we had no regrets as we gave him hopefully as much love and joy as he gave us. We have a small memorial in the living room with a collage of him, his collar and leash, a cast of his foot print, and an urn ith his ashes. We hopped right back in to it though and just recently got two more Shiba's from the same breeder. A pure american red female Shiba named Mia and a pure Japanese sesame male Shiba named Grizz. Both are a handful but absolutely well worth it. I always recommend taking a little to reflect and heal and then getting right back into it with another puppy. |

"Shiba's are to Akitas as Huskies are to Malamutes". At least that's the comparison that always comes to my mind. Simi will have a place on
the mantel right next to Bucca. My wife and I started that conversation about another one at least 6 months ago; this week has been one of the roughest
I've ever had in my life. I keep on checking to make sure the water bowl is full. So, another dog is in our future, just not quite yet.
Seriously folks, thanks for the responses in this thread. I know I'm not the only person that's ever had to do this, and won't be the last, but all the memories help.

So sorry for your loss.
About 3 years ago, I lost three of my best friends in the span of a year. I've had dogs as short as one year, and as long as sixteen years. It all hurts the same. My 15 y.o. is watching me now... Take heart, it won't be long til you remember her with smiles instead of sadness. Dave |

sorry for your loss brother. We lost my golden retriever Madison earlier this year and I can honestly say it is one of the most painful experiences I have
ever been through. I know these words do not ease your pain, just wanted to let you know that we feel for you and will keep your family in our hearts. It
still amazes me how close we become to dogs, I know it is a blessing, but with that it sure hurts when the time comes.
